hi,
it finally snowed here in denver and my abs doesn't work at all. tried to pull codes and i got a code 20. but mitchell and all data don't give any definitions for this code other than it needs repaired before any other codes can be displayed. does anyone know what a code 20 is? also my light doesn't come on when i start the car, could this be the source of my problem?

Let's play 20 questions?

Start with identifying your vehicle by year, and engine/tranny.

We aren't psychic and there are year-to-year differences.

I don't see a DTC 20 in the factory service manual.

Well, since the post is in the Gen1/2 section, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the car is a 1990-1995. So we've reduced the selection down from 10 years to a 6 year span. Since the 1990-1995 SHO's all used the same ABS hardware, it's pretty safe to say that the codes will be the same throughout all those years.

Phew, all that deductive reasoning there... my brain hurts! But I'll keep going.

TCCA maintains a comprehensive list of DTC codes for the Taurus. The ABS DTC list is here:

http://www.taurusclub.com/modules.php?name=Guides&op=viewarticle&artid=14

There is no code 20, however, there is a code 11. If you were reading the codes using the flashing light method, then it's easy to mis-interpret a code 11 as a code 20 if this was your first time.

Code 11 - Disturbed or defective redundancy channel.

If this is in fact the correct code, I don't have an answer for you as to what that is, but hopefully someone will chime in with an answer.

Good luck getting your ABS fixed! :thumb:

If the ABS light is ON, the ABS system is forced offline. It cannot function until the ABS passes its power on and operational self-tests.

Of course its a 90-95. However, there are major changes in the power distribution circuits that affect this circuit. That's what the correct identification is important.

The ABS light SHOULD come on at bulb prove-out.

Here's some more deductive reasoning along the same lines: it's impossible to read a code 20 by counting flashing lights, since there is no way for the system to flash a "0". ;)

My Ford manuals says ABS code 11 indicates that a disturbed or defective redundancy channel means there is a problem with the ABS module. The pinpoint test is short and direct:

DTC 11: ELECTRICAL DISTURBANCE

l Read all DTC(s) and record.

l After all DTC(s) are read and written down, drive vehicle above 40 km/h (25 mph) to clear memory.

l Read all DTC(s) again.

l Is DTC 11 present?

Yes
REPLACE anti-lock brake control module.

Whatever. Your attitude may may be reflected in future responses (or lack thereof) unless it improves. It is YOUR choice.

See ABS Code Retrieval

Once you have the relevent code(s), the system can be diagnosed.

The abs in these cars is not that great anyway. I ended up just unpluging mine because it was going to cost so much to fix all the wheel speed sensors...........I actually like the feel of the "true" brakes better now!

P.S. When asking others to help you figure out a problem, it would be helpful if you were thankful for any info.........getting an attitude will not get the answers you need.

Rockledge just gave you your answer a few posts above this one. If you drive the car above 25kph and the code remains at the next restart, it's likely time for a new ABS control module. You can find one at your local JY or on eBay pretty easily, since the same system is used in SHO and non-SHO alike.

Shopower, new guys who cop an attitude usually get ignored in short order around here, regardless of what the reason is; just something to think about for later.

projectSHO89, he didn't ask if there were any psychic's in the house, he asked if anyone could help him diagnose his ABS problem. Not everyone here is an expert, as is evidenced by the abundance of questions, so if he left out some info, just let him know. The psychic comment woulda set me off too, to be honest.
