Just bought a 98 SHO with 154,000 miles and have gotten it running but maybe matter what I do it will not shift to 4th gear. No slipping or anything, just won’t shift. Here are the series of events that I went through:

1. New trans fluid and filter. There was not any metal in the bottom of the pan or anything. still no 4th gear shift.

2. Gave me the P0761 code for solenoid 3 not working. I then went it and replaced the solenoid, forward control valve, and entire valve body. Still no shift to 4th.

I will experience the speedometer to drop a few mph occasionally but there’s no ABS light or anything so I don’t think that is contributing. My next theory is to check wiring to the transmission and if no avail I will just have to pull it out and go from there. Any tips?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had that issue with my 97.
Shift solenoid in the trans.
Ford had it for about a month waiting for parts.

Edit. I guess I should’ve read your whole post lol. Looks like your on the right track

Access to any of Fords ids software?
You might be able to find something through the OBD 2 though forscan

I thought I remember the tech working on my car telling me you could manually turn on the solenoids to check them. At least that would eliminate the wiring

iirc there was a snap ring problem that would prevent 4th gear engagement on that transmission. There is a thread on the forum with all the details on how to fix. You definitely want to check that out before pulling the trans.

Went in and replaced that while we were in there as well. Did not look damaged.

If I recall....

AX4N 96/97 vs AX4N 98/99 there was a difference in some value - resistance, impedance? ( I forget) - on the solenoids.

Are you absolutely sure you got the right year solenoid? I find the chain parts stores feed us 1997 compatible parts first as a rule of thumb.

NAPA seems to have better luck in my experiences on the more obscure but still available parts.

I got it from rock auto. I believe it is right for 98.
