I'm the proud owner of a 2010 Ford SHO-EcoBoost. Based on what I've read thus far everyone seems to prefer tuning their cars with LiverNois and implement Water/Methanol Injection kits. I don't have that kind of money at the moment and wanted to get some feedback from you all.

My Action List:
  1. Buy CAI (Airaid 451-260 SynthaMax Dry Filter Intake System) - I'm currently on Amazon.
  2. Need help - What cost effective (less than $500) Performance Tune should I get as a beginner?
    • I'm reading diablo, edge products, SCT's (any advice)?
  3. What spark plugs do you recommend ?

Save the money on the CAI and get the mycal tuner from Livernois ($600). Get a drop in filter (K&N) for the stock.

Get the 3bar 4x+ tune, most aggressive tune they have. You'll end up running it, so might as well just get the bad boy tune from the rip.

Motorcraft SP534'S gapped at .030 (should be pre-gapped)

Welcome, DVS_SHO, congrats on picking up the '10! Run through the maintenance check lists first (change engine oil/trans fluid/PTU&RDU fluids etc, inspect & tighten all turbo hoses & clamps, for example), then get a tune/3bar/TStat + the dropin filter, like Rich said.

Tstat I'd purchase from the tuner you choose...

Livernois 160*
Unleashed 170*

3bar can be found as Tasca parts or Rock auto for around $50

@DVS_SHO I would have to agree with Rich on this one. A new CAI is not going to add 20 whp anymore...the speed density intakes just don't have that in them. Instead, they will yield around 5-7, but add a little bit of efficiency and turbo noise. Purchase our MyCalibrator tuner for your car w/ our EvenFlo 160° tstat and 3BAR MAP. Your car will be completely transformed into a whole new monster! Just ask the senior road test editor's 4..6L Jag...its been declawed by a LMS SHO!

After that if you need more we still have you covered with our Thunderstorm race catted downpipes!

Just a question for you do you think a E85 tune would help my car out any?

We will not tune for pump E85. There is too much variance between the fuel accuracy and fuel quality from pump to pump, station to station and state to state. We do however tune for VP racing fuels C85!

C85
If you’re committed to using E85 type fuels, C85 is by far your best choice. Conventional E85 fuels are notoriously inconsistent, requiring up to a two-jet swing in tuning from one batch of E85 to the next. By contrast, C85 is blended with a consistent proportion of ethanol and every other component in every drum. In addition to taking all the guesswork out of tuning, C85 makes up to 4% more power and torque than conventional E85. With higher quality pure components, C85 is superior to E85 in terms of cooling effect, resistance to detonation and even includes corrosion inhibitors to fight the issues presented by ethanol. C85 works well in drag racing, oval track, off road and virtually any other automotive application, in particular forced induction applications due to its lower vapor pressure. Tests of C85 indicate most applications will require richening up by 1 jet size, or 2-3% over current jetting. Note that for racers unwilling to invest in the new carb and expensive fuel system upgrade required for E85, VP’s MS109, VP113 and Q16 continue to be the best race gas alternatives for the money.

Tuning for a net E30 content, you can see the same gains as if you had methanol injection (meth) - 4-5 tenths in a quarter mile. HOWEVER, mileage would suffer, as would OEM seals & fuel system components if exposed at this concentration in the long run. Also would not get the benefits of cleaning the back of the intake valves that you get if you installed meth. So really, recommended at E30 level for track use only.

From Rich's own experimentation, a daily driver can do pretty well with up a net E18 concentration w/o any tune changes.

Straight E85, you are looking for a fuel system upgrade to make that work.

DVS_SHO update (8/14/15):

1. K&N Drop-In Filter (PN#33-2395)
2. Motocraft Spark Plugs gapped @ .0300 (PN#SP-534)
3. ***UNLEASHED TUNE for 93*** Thank you Torrie!
4. 3bar MAP Sensor (PN#CX-2231 / AA5Z-9F479-B)
5. Reishe 170 degree Performance TStat (PN#RP-FOrD-4D)

I've never been the type to pump money into my cars until now, only because I have a good reason to and it's simply about the SHO.
My experience thus far with UNLEASHED has been incredible, Torrie MUST have a batman smartphone embedded to his hip at least I think he must have. I have to say from my own personal experience he epitomizes the definition "RESPONSIVE".

I have question for everyone on here:
  • Since I added these mods, when i go WOT i smell sense like a propane scent afterwards.
    • Anyone else experienced this or something similar after these non-bolt-on mods???????

Well, I certainly hope this is NOT the case, but check your trans-PTU area for leaks. Could be PTU fluid pooping from the vent. At least that's what it turns out to be on the Edge. PTU fluid is brownish in color, and STINKY.

Had you done an exhaust update, I'd have said maybe the oils burning off the components. Normal.

Smell like this can also come from blocked exhaust vents behind the rear bumper cover. The vents would need to be repositioned if so.

@shoded:

Ill give it a look this week, i gotta pick a day during the week to work from home. I found some good reference "HOW-TO's" links for PTU and RDU.

I've done no exhaust updates still stock at the moment.

Thank you in advance for the feedback

If the SHO didn't have electric power steering, I would have said to check that also. Apparently Mercon fluid blowing over a hot exhaust has the same smell, which makes sense, as many times the trans & power steering fluid are the same spec or very similar.

Apparently, the windshield wipers can get moldy if they are left on too long and/or get a really good soaking.

I have basically the same thing other than the thermostat.. Torrie is very quick getting back to you for sure. Make sure you data log and send the logs to him to make sure everything is good.

This is what I like about Unleashed over LMS. You can data log. You cant with the Mycal. I don't know why LMS chose to work off the Mycal/Hypertech device. I'm not taking anything away from LMS, I run their tune in my 13 F150 EcoBoost and absolutely love it. I bought a SCT X3 so I could data log. I don't care what anyone says. I wont to be able to know what is going on and make sure the tune is safe and running like it should.

Again, not trying to take anything away from LMS, but I call total BS on that. If it infact did, why doesn't every tuner tune with the Mycal device? I have talked to every tuner extensively about this. Erick Gunter, Shawn ellis, Torrie, The guys at JMS, and they all say that is complete horse ****. Its a monetary thing for LMS I assume. I'm sure they have some sort of financial interest in the MyCal device. Or its easier to work with. And that's cool. I like the device in that it tunes quick and is very simple to use. I like it even better than my SCT device, but I just don't like that you cant data log.

Edit: I'm sure LMS isn't going to like my post its my observation. Maybe I'm wrong. I am a very happy customer of theirs and so is my dad.

Yeah sounds kinda funny to me to, but I have no proof...
