brand new firestone firehawk tires today!! on my black sho rims! same size as factory tires, and same size as was previously on the car.

now for the problem:

the passengers side front tire rubs on the cap thingy around the bottom of the spring (from what i can see). the drivers side doesnt. it smells like somethings burning thasts how bad it is.

on my stepdads red sho, he has the same exact tires on the front, and they dont rub at all. but also, from what i can see, the cover thing on the bottom of the spring on his car is alot smaller than the one on mine, almost like it was cut (both passenger and drivers sides).

mines a 93 atx, his is a 93 mtx. any reason why those parts would be different?
and more importantly, what is causing the rubbing problem and how do i fix it? i was instructed not to drive my car. and i kno i need a tie rod on the passengers side, i forget which one tho, but would that cause it?

Sounds like your car has had the Ford coil spring recall done (which is the larger cover at the bottom of the spring).

Never heard of any rubbing issues though. Sure you don't have a bad wheel bearing or bent suspension?

also i should add that there was no rubbing with a new dunlop tire of the same size on that side, although when i put that tire on i honestly wasnt listening for any noise.

well, the passenger side was, how should i say this. i tried to take a 90degree corner in a parking lot at 45 in the pouring rain and screwed everything up, but i replaced everything that i broke. im pretty sure the wheel bearings are fine. as for suspension i have no idea, but that is next on my list, suspension overhaul. any way to fix this even temporarily? i dont wanna damage my nice new tires, and my trip to work is 20miles each way.

thats what im thinking maybe. the drivers side looks really close, i cant get my pointer finger in between the tire and the spring cover, but there is a space. the passengers side forget it, its touching. when i moved the car around in my driveway i could hear the tire squeaking against it. will there be any damage if i drive it like this tomorrow to and from work? 40miles, maybe a lil more

wouldnt a loose pinch bolt make a noise? also just thought maybe when my tire came off while driving on the highway due to loose lugnuts awhile ago the shield got bent, and maybe i didnt notice the rubbing noise on the old new tire. lol

Yes, you will surely ruin your new tire. Did you have the tires installed somewhere, or did you just take them the rims? I would have them or a shop specializing in suspension work take a closer look at the car......

He said factory size and rim in first post

:nut:Sorry, too much reading / studying today... short term memory gone.

Although it doesnt hurt to double check all tire sizes are 215/60R16. Sometimes they only check the size of the first tire and they might have got a different size thrown in when they installed them. I've seen it happen.

If all is good (which it most likely is) im x2 on the pinch bolt. There is supposed to be a tab welded to prevent the knuckle from sliding too far up the strut, but if the bolt was slightly loose it could have slid up and worn a bit.

yes factory size tires. italian slicer rims i painted n dropped off at a tire shop, they mounted n balanced. upon closer inspection, it looks as if the cover on the passengers side is bent more than the drivers side. it didnt do anything with the old new dunlop tire b/c the tread pattern on that was nothing compared to the treads on the firehawk.

im waking up extra early in the morning to see if me bending the cover back slightly stops the rubbing, and if not, off goes the tire and off goes the cover, as new shocks/struts are coming next anyways

ill see if i can check the pinch bolt in the morning too. for the record, when i brought the car to have them put my new tires on, the guys had no clue what directional rims meant and no clue how to tell which was which so i basically said "this one goes here this one goes here" and they ACTUALLY asked me "how do you know which ones go on the left?" herpderp for one they slice inwards towards the front, and second, yeah hi it says right on the rim left/right. so i checked to make sure all 4 were the same time size and everything, right down to the V rating

jack up the front of the car and pop both front wheels off, and grab a tape measure. Check the distance between the top of the knuckle to the bottom of the spring seat on the strut. Compare the measurement on both sides, and that should tell you if your knuckle slid up or not.

You can have 5 tires of the same size (225/60/16) lined up next to eachother. If you actually got down and measured them, you would find they would all measure slightly different in size.
