How may times must I roll this over before the timing marks on the belt and the dots on the cams line up. The closest I`ve gotten is 2 teeth. The belt is old but looks in very good shape. If I ca`nt get these makrs to match should I just close as possible or what. Don`t need to make any mistakes. I need to be certain.

Thanks for your help.

The belt "walks" on the pulleys. That means it moves one or more teeth on the pulley easch time around. Those instructions are either wrong or misleading. The only thing that needs to be aligned are the index marks and the lines on teh belts when the belt is first installed. After the first turn of the crank, all line-ups are gone. You can orient the crank and the cams to 0 degrees BTDC by setting the index marks as when the belt was first installed, but the white marks on the belt will not match up. This does not mean that the timing is off, only that the crank has been turned.

With the crank at 0 degrees,,top dead center, BOTH of the cam sprocket dots will be either straight up, or straight down. This is a four stroke, remember, they could be either position,but both must match. Zero degrees on the crank is when the dot on the crank gear is at about 5 o clock, aligns with a raised line in the casting behind it.

Thank you Sir.
I never considered the"walk". I have it on now.
My Chiltons book was finally located. Had to clean the nasty dot on the cog just to be sure.
@5 PM. Cam index marks @ 12 O'clock high.
Can the oil seal be changed after belt installation and if not does the vane pulley cog need removed for oil seal install? My book is vague and actually does not mention anything other than dampner removal.
You should see this belt..162000 miles and looks mucho better than one I just changed on my Xr4ti with only 60000 miles on the belt. How about the CPS sensor is there a seal there that should be replaced while I'm in there. Lots of oil on the backside between the firewall..
Guess next week it's plugs wires and gaskets. Oil in all the plug wells. Sure hope the new CKS lets tthis baby start.

You have to remove the belt, and the crank timing gear (after the crank pully is removed) to get to the front main oil seal.

Lots of oil on the backside between the firewall..
Firewall? Or do you mean the block behind the timing belt? If it's on the block above the crank, better pull the cam gears off and see if the cam seals have been leaking. If you did mena the firewall, check the cam seal behind the cam sensor. When I pulled mine off, there was at least a tablespoon of oil inside the sensor and mounting block due to leaky seal.

Make sure you set the gap for the CKP at .030 "
