New oil pan gasket ?

While using the "search" button, trying to learn what is required to change the iol pan gasket, I found a postthat said Napa had a full pan gasket, not just the ends and some RTV sealant. Has enyone tried this ? Would it be possible to install this WITHOUT dropping the Y-pipe ?

Napa probably has the wrong part listed. The front and rear is sealed with rubber and the middle is sealed with RTV. It would be impossible to replace this seal without dropping the Y-pipe.

Yep, wrong listing at NAPA. There is someone on this list that said they removed the oil pan without dropping the y-pipe. I am not seeing how this was done. It was just as easy to drop the pipe and install a high flow at that time... The oil pan is a cake walk, so while you are dropping it. Change the rod bearings.

Autozone...16.99 ...comes with 2 half circle type rubber gaskets for each crank end and 2 tubes of rtv for the flat surface on the block.....strange but true. Drop y pipe, clean off old stuff, (oh yea, change rod bearings) and reinstall.

Why is everyone suggesting replacing the rod bearings ? Is this a common failure ?

I thought I read getting the "y-pipe" off was a bear, let alone the O2 sensors that come off the pipe before you remove it.

Also maybe someone can chime in here but oil pan RTV has always sealed better if I apply it to the pana nd let it sit for say 15 minutes or so and then install it. This allows the RTV to start to set.

Maybe its not the same on the SHO.

Regarding the rod bearings: you have a high revving engine with unknown history and other peoples driving habits. The rod bearings are not a "common" think to go wrong on cars that are treated right (not driving hard before they warm up, regular oil changes etc), but replacing them before they go bad is 1/10th the effort of dealing with one that spins. you have 90% of the work done when you have the oil pan off...mind as well spend the extra 40 bucks and do the rod bearings. Get really crazy and spend another 65 for the main bearings too if you are keeping the car forever like me. They are all easy to change.


Re: oil pan RTV: you are right on...give it a few min (15 is pretty high) to get tacky before you set it.
