The factory original multifunction switch was finally wearing out and its time was up. I installed a new NAPA Echlin part. Everything works perfect (as they should) but now there is a VERY annoying issue. I've had this SHO for 14 years and this never happened before the new switch.

ISSUE: moving the MF switch to the RIGHT (for the turn signal) cancels the cruise control. The cruise control is still on but is cancelled like to hit the brake pedal. Hitting 'resume' brings the CC back to its previous speed.

I was meticulous with removing the old part and installing the new. The two thoughts I have are a defective new part or a wire in the column is shorting the CC. I would like hear thoughts on what else could possibly be causing this.

This was fun to deal with while driving back from the convention at 80mph.....

don't use the turn signal when CC is on.

but for real, possible short, bad/loose wiring. taking it all apart may have disturbed something.

all the turn signals still operating as they should outside the car??

the cruise works through the steering wheel clock spring, not the multi-function switch. the fact that moving the multi-function switch to the right cancels the cruise suggests that the switch interferes with the clock spring and makes some important contact disengage. I would start my trouble-shooting there.

or... the turn signal, which interrupts the brake signal to flash the lights, grounds or routes power or something incorrectly (however it works), cancelling the CC as if you had stepped on the brake pedal...

he changed the multifunction switch and the problem started.

Update:

I got tired of not only the cruise control issue but more so the entire (new) multifunction switch. The design and overall quality is sub par. I returned the Echlin part to Napa and purchased a Motorcraft part through O'Reillys for $20 more! The difference in overall function and quality is night and day. Now knowing this I would happily pay double for the factory original version.....

.....and for those curious about the cruise cancelling issue, gone! :munch:

I would have never paid a premium for the Motorcraft part as there are so many stories about the original install being a real problem point.
It is hard to believe that some other manufacturer made it worse.

I will confirm this problem manifested after the MFS was replaced with a MFS of unknown origin some time ago.

I never felt it was inconvienent enough to R&R. If I ever do I'll make sure and use the OE part.

Thanks, you learn something new everday!

Hmm, that mean I would be asked to look into that, eh? :munch:

I've had this issue on my 94 as well, except mine cancels the CC when I signal left, and with the lights on, I cannot resume or turn CC back on. I have to turn the lights off in order to resume the CC.

Here's my thread

Perhaps replacing the MF switch will fix my issues, too.
