OK, so my wife and I put an offer in on a new house tonight. It's got a 2 car garage. (Finally!!! No more on street parking!!!!)

Plan on keeping one stall free for tinkering, etc. Standard height garage (1 floor's worth, maybe 8 feet?) So, as I get started with doing my own work... what are your suggestions on first things to fill my awesome new garage with? What tools, supplies, etc.?

Oh, and wish me luck on the offer. We kind of made it a best and final offer at the urging of the agent. We'll know by Friday.

So what should be on my shopping list? GO NUTS!! But mark "essentials" as such, and "would be awesomes" for what they are too... ThAnKs!

first, blow up the 2-car garage and replace it with at least a 4-car garage.

seriously though, you will find that stuff expands to fill the space available, so you can never have too much room.

tool requirements: a decent rolling toolbox with at least 10 drawers for various tools, a full set of standard and deep sockets from 7mm to 19mm at least, at least a foot of extensions, both 3/8 and 1/2" drive extensions and a 1/2" breaker, a piece of pipe for a cheater, a set of box-end/open end wrenches in the sizes above, 4 good jackstands, a good floor jack, a creeper, a bunch of shop towels, and rubber gloves.

as you start doing things, you will need to add various pullers, taps, soldering iron and supplies, possibly welder, drills (cordless and plug in), etc.

best wishes!

oh, btw, when you start making babies, you will find you have no time or money for any of the above...

Thanks guys!

You know what... the garage is actually under the house (side entry) and I was very seriously considering within a few years filling it in as "finished basement" for game rooms and such... then Making a 2 story addition off that for a new garage with a higher ceiling and large family room over it with vaulted ceilings. Figure cost will be less than $100K, but could add more than that to the total value of the home. But we'll see...

oh, btw, when you start making babies, you will find you have no time or money for any of the above...

Actually, I lucked out there. I'm pretty sure we've already made all the babies we're gonna. ;)

Yeah... the current garage is unheated, but that's what space heaters are for, right? That said, it may not be an issue. Found out this morning that the lady that owns it is having concerns/second thoughts over moving right now. (sigh) We'll know for sure tomorrow night sometime. Wish me luck.

So, the lady selling that beautiful house with 2 1/2 car garage decided upon receiving our offer that she didn't want to move after all.... :madflame: Her house is now delisted.

:braincramp:

Well, on the positive side, we found an even bigger house for about $85k less... 3,250 sq.ft. not including the giganormous basement! :omg: Yes, it has a garage, but it's a touch smaller (regular 2 car), but it has a higher ceiling, so I could conceivably put anchors for a portable lift in the middle between the door runners. :woo-hoo: (I haven't measured that yet, so can't say for sure.)

Anyhow... the offer for the bigger house has been accepted, just waiting on inspection and such. If all goes well, we'll be in there by the end of November. Just in time for the snow... which means no more tow trucks plowing us in... no more crappy downtown winter potholes... no more fear of someone slashing my SHO's tires :yipee:

I friggin' can't wait!!

Here's a couple of the pics from Zillow... gives you a feel for the size and condition... both which are excellent - only flaw is the roof will need updating within 10 years... but the bedrooms, all of them, are Godzilla sized. And in the first pic, you can clearly see the rather odd styled bedroom for the SHO. Anyhow, it really needs some cosmetic updating, as the décor is neither mine or my wife's. All good though, I like remodeling. It's fun. Plus, now I have a good reason to buy some scaffolding! :woo-hoo:

Knock on wood though, right? The deal ain't closed until it's closed.

That's a beaut! Thinking of adding solar at any time? The roof looks like it has enough exposure, but you'd probably have to update the roof first.

Honestly, I hadn't thought about that at ALL. I've never been convinced the savings are worth the installation cost. But then, I've never had such a large area to work with... my old (and current) house is considerably smaller, without much roof to really work with... not to mention the risk of damaging the already brittle 100 year old slate.

Ahh very nice! Hope it goes through! Looks like you could fit a lift in there no problem! Can't wait til I get to that point.. I'm 20 and a full time college student (senior now though for Software Engineering) and not to mention I sent off my application to Ford in Michigan for an internship there! If I land a job there then I can get a nice bedroom for the SHO! And a Shelby in due time ;)

Justin, awesome on the future plans! I hope they've been teaching you old and new school stuff... C++, assembly, etc., but also web development too. Pretty much, with rare exceptions, most jobs in our industry these days are either web development (vast majority) or embedded (low level device programming). With any luck, you'll be working on next gen human-automotive interfaces with MyFord Touch 3? That'd be friggin' awesome!! I'd really enjoy that myself... just imagining all that I could do with that nice touch screen with some custom screens not released to public... muhHAHahahaha... :nerd:

:omg: I just found out Ford has an SDK!!! Holy SCHNIKEYS!! I'm gonna have some fun tonight!!!!!!! :woo-hoo::woo-hoo:

Nah... I love my ride. Perhaps when the 2016's come out. Especially if they're under 3,500 lbs. muhahahaha.

Haha thanks! I'm also minoring in Information Technology Management so i have web background and stuff. We use Java mainly and some C++.. Pretty similar languages. Worked on an embedded systems project also to help me prepare for it. Currently working on a research project now where we are taking an open source autopilot system (pixhawk) and are going to design an RC car to auto-drive itself. It's been pretty interesting, but we're just in the beginning stages still. We will set up a full maze in a parking lot using cones and it will have to drive itself all the way through the maze without our help. Hoping it'll help me if I get in with Ford also :p Might be working on a future development team on auto-steer and what not, since that's what will eventually happen! Already have the google self-driven car, and some newer cars have that safety feature to steer you if you are driving over the line.
