It turns out the previous owner had replaced the fuel pump at some point, and it looks like it was done at a dealer. I haven't seen any other shops (at least around here) that use these type of clamps:
I know it was replaced because the pump I pulled had a '91 Ford part number stamped on it: F1DU-9350-E2A. It was also stamped Walbro. Did they make pumps for Ford?
So the car runs better with the new pump and new filter. No clue how many miles the pump had, but it was at least 70k, as I haven't swapped a pump in this car before.
The car is an '89, so it has the two stage (low volt/high volt) fuel pump circuit. It almost felt like the pump was running out of steam at the top of both ranges. The transition to high volt and to the secondaries is at about 4000 rpm, which is much smoother now with the new pump.
Or maybe I imagined it all.
New pump is a Walbro 155lph unit from shosource.
