ok, just to clarify i'm not a noob (ok, maybe a half noob) and i've pulled codes many times before just never on this particular SHO.

i have a severe bucking problem and i need to pull codes before i just start tossing money at it (thinking it's probably iab or tps) but i went to jumper the connecters and the STI (single pin) is GONE.

i spent 2 hours under the hood looking for this thing and it is not where it's been on every sho i've ever worked on. it's not under the hood the big connector goes under.

Are there any other places they could hide this? was there discrepancies sho to sho? i'm about ready to drive this off a cliff.

on a side note, i have access to a garage with a real diagnostic computer (modis) but we couldnt find a port for that either. do these have one? i thought all (modern) cars had a plug for diagnostics.

well, that would be the key word, "modern". only 96+ cars had OBD2, which is what modis reads. Maybe the connector got cut off? It's on the same place on every taurus (not just the SHOs) I've ever seen.

i thought about that. isnt the wire brown? what harness does it come out of? i guess if it's cut i could just stick the damn thing in the other connector, trick is finding it...

There are 2 connectors back there.. I pulled the covers off both to find the right one. (with help) Keep digging.. It's there somewhere. I believe the single connector has a light gray plug:snicker: :nut:

I believe that single wire connector is just a solid ground. If that's so, you can use any good ground to trip the code reading sequence. I think. Where's Steve (project sho 89) when you need him.

whose to say the sti doesnt just go to ground?

94sho, when you said you pulled both covers are you talking about the ABS test? yeah, no luck there. any more help, or a way to bypass the sti connector, keep it coming.
i'm going out of town tonight but i'll be back sunday to try

thanks.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I had a bad bucking problem on mine as well a while back. It would go away when the secondaries opened up, which made it even more weird.

The codes showed an injector not firing, or misfiring, I forget which.

Anyway, try two things...I don't know for sure which one fixed it, but they are cheap and easy to do. First, check all your wiring that goes to the fuel injectors. Tape up even the smallest bare spot you find. I had a couple of spots where the wiring touches the intake that were a little worn.

Then replace the fuel filter. Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but I replaced it and it went away for about a week. Then it came back, I replaced it again. That was well over a year ago, and no more problems.

Anyway, it's a place to start until you can find your code reader connector. Perhaps the holder broke, and it's just laying on something under the engine.

Good luck.

Well, if someone has cut off the sti plug for some strange reason, then peel the
wiring harness below the diagnostic plug. the single wire may be in there.
Personally, mine was way down behind the rear head. All I could find was the
abs plug. So, if indeed you have found both the abs and diag. plugs, and the single sti plug is not present, then look in the wiring harness for the missing wire.
( it's free!) :naughty:

i "threw" a new fuel filter and TPS (eh, it was only 20 bucks) at it and it's not bucking any longer. it's more or less running as it should but i still swear up and down that it doesnt feel as strong as it ought to. it's always been this way, but when it finally stopped running i almost started to think that something was letting go, making it weak, then once it broke it finally "let" go, and that once i replaced what i needed to it'd be quick. i'll make another thread for all that though.

i'm going to be pulling the intake sometime soon, i'll dig for that connector then.

Pull the vac. line off your fuel regulator. plug the manifold ******. This will give you max. pressure the pump will give.(40-42 psi) See if this helps. My regulator
went bad, and gave me all kinds off idling/ surging/ stalling problems.
Hope this helps!:salute:

ok, i know it's been a minute, i've punted this car and been doing other things. i got back into it a little today.

I have the intake mani off and i can verify something. There is no STI connector. i've dug all around, by the rear exhaust, peeled back the wire cover on the data link connector. i don't have the roll dampers, battery or intake in so i have a pretty open shot, and i'm telling you, there is no STI, or even a stray wire.

do i have any options for making my own or pulling codes? i don't know what the prior owner did but it's GONE.

I got a CE light on my 91 that I picked up a couple month ago. I went to plug my scan tool in and couldn't find the gray connector either. I searched around for 30 minutes and finally gave up. I had another 91 and it had the gray connector. My 90 that was sitting right next to it also had a gray connector but for some reason it wasn't there. I peeled back the tape and plastic and couldn't find any wires either. The only thing that I noticed is that there was an extra wire on the 91's back connector that my 90 didn't have. I gave up for the day because I was frustrated.

no ideas? it really ISNT there. i need to pull codes somehow. i'm about fed with this car, but no one will buy a sho that is unable to read codes!

is swapping in a new wiring harness a viable solution?

what type of pita are we talking with that? it can't be worse than having to pull the tranny 3 times in a row (after it being stolen, with your new quaife no less) only to have the engine not run right can it?

In all this, I've never seen you identify what year/engine, etc you're working on. Do so.

Worst case, I'd unbundle the wiring harness back towards the PCM connector to see if the brown wire is taped back in there somewhere.

Where in Missouri are you located? If near St. Louis, one of us over here can likely help.

Sorry for bringing up such an old tread but I need some help. I got a CEl on my 92 MTX and well there is no STI plug any where to be had so I was wondering what the true count is on wires that go it to the main connector and what is the color of the wire just brown or does it have a tracer? I dont want to take chance and melt the PCM.
