I'm wondering if this is the same problem that Rio was just describing. I start my SHO in the cold, and I get this "BVVRRIIPPP!" sort of noise just after I let the key back and the car is running on its own. Not really a screech or squeek, but rather a, uh, well, a, noise of some slipping. No profound screech though, as with a belt slipping when too loose. It got much louder today. The alternator belt is about as tight as it can be, as I loosened the nut about 1/2 turn after I noticed a faint burning smell once in a while. And that was after I tightened it about 1-2 turns because it began obviously slipping. Just when it gets loud, that really starts to worry me! eek! Is this probably the same thing, a belt slipping, or perhaps the oil pump? Is anything at great risk perhaps?

Mine did that when the idler pully bearing collapsed. It was also accompanied by a lot of smoke from the back of the belt then riding in the stationary pulley.

Try to determine which side of the engine the noise is coming from, there are other things that might account for the noise, such as a sluggish starter bendix disengagement.

I have the same problem, It only happens in the cold and it seems to come from the pulley side of the engine. Mines done it in the cold since i got it and i've had not problems yet. I think it just has something to do with a bearing or belt tension. When its cold the belt will shrink a little.

Mine does the same thing, and sometimes while driving, the charge light comes on. I think my alernator is going...

I can pretty much confirm that its the alternator cause my blower fan sometimes does not run, there is power to the ETAC controls, but no fan. With the engine off and running only on battery the fan runs fine...

Without hearing it, I am going to guess starter motor. The armature will stick sometimes and the engine will "spin" it back into it's resting position. Again, unless you can take a soundlclip, this is just a completely random guess, but since it's coming immediately after the engine is spinning under it's own power that is what I think.

I have the exact same problem, i couldnt exactly describe how it sounded though, you did about the best, lol. It is loud for sure. Mine started doing it since my oil pressure problems....see "Rebuild?" ...I dont know if its related to that or if it could possibly be one of those other problems that was mentioned. I also just got a monster stereo installed, so im thinking the alternator is a possibility also?...someone mentioned that...I dunno...

I recently bought a 93 mtx and had to put a clutch in it and a tranny because the differential pin blew through one side of the case while the fifth gear bearing (or what was left of it) wore through the other side. But anyways just recently while it was cold, We are talking below zero every morning now. That same noise has happened. I cant stand new noises that happen so if and when I pinpoint it I will inform you guys. By the way I am very impressed and pleased with my car so far and I hope I get many more miles out of it

I had a guy at work listen to that annoying start up noise. His guess is that there is something under the hood that flaps around until engine vacuum pressure pulls closed/open the offending noise maker. Sounds good to me!! I have heard a stuck starter before. This ain't it. Also, I just replaced the starter a few weeks ago when the old one shit the bed. Ain't the alternator wine either. I have that as well and it's a different pitch.

Just something you may find interesting...Today i heard the same noise that has been happening with my SHO, on my work van, only not as severe, or as long. It was quick there and gone. I work for a heating/cooling business and its a dodge ram 3500 van, i dont think theres any relations at all, lol...It has to be something thats on all vehicles....It has been crazy cold lately..close to 0 here, below at night, I hear it hit 20s in Florida is this true?! What would do this when cold, but not otherwise?

I have been also having the same thing. It seems to me to be almost a groaning sound, but a little higher pitched. It only started a week ago and never, ever did it before. It has been really cold, and it only does it in the morning.

For what it is wourth guys. I would just say this. I'm not a MO-chanic and I never work on my own vehicles (I have dumb-luck). But sounds to me like this has to do with the starter, and how it is built. I figure it is just that the starter is cold and since cold, is slower to dis-engauge from the crank.

Will someone (with this noise problem) do the following. Place the car somewhere where it will stay warmer. Example: Garage or put a cover (one you would put on the ground when working on your car with) over the starter before you go to bed. (NOTE: Please, if your going to use a cover, make sure to remove it before starting the car and don't place it on the starter while the car is HOT!)

This will tell you wether or not this is just a "Slow Disengauging Starter" which is FORDS FAULT, NOT OURS.

Hey, enough complaints would have a recall. ;o)

The same thing just started happening to me. Again, it only happens if the car has been sitting for a long time ( i.e. over night) in the cold. It almost sounds like a record player when the needle is moved and it skips. OK that didn't come out right but it's really hard to describe...kinda a zipperish noise but deeper. Only lasts for half a second. Wierd, but if it is happening to everyone else and it is only cold relate, I assume it probably isn't something I should be overly owrried about.

now i don't feel so bad cause i'm not the only one with this noise. Only seems to happen if the temps fall below 25 out and the car sits overnight or for at least several hours. I had given up on finding a solution. I figured if something breaks then i'll fix it.. :)

Mine also does the "special" noise. But only in the cold and when I start it in the garage I don't have any problems. Or if I have drivin the car within 6-8hrs it won't happen either.

I think there is something in the water

And all of you are imagining things
Pretty sure you won't have that problem in CA.

By the way, i dont know if this sound and my starter being bad is related. I will tell you wether or not i hear the sound after the new starter goes in.

I get the same sound on start up after the car has been sitting all night also only when its very cold. I got the wife to start the car while I had my head under the hood, its not comming from the belt or the front belt idler, It alsomst seems to be comming from the power steering pump. Maybe the fluid is too thick. But it is a hard think to track when ya can only hear it for a second one a day..

You all may not want to hear this, but it sounds like your bearings have a little clearance in them, and in the extremely cold weather we're having, it takes a little while for the oil to get to them. Mine made this noise until I replaced the rod bearings, and silence after that. The noise may be reduced by switching to 5w30 Castrol GTX. If you're running synthetic and getting this noise, I would recommend switching to a high quality organic oil. Valvoline is my personal choice, Scott likes castrol gtx.
