No one asked what sync generation he/she has.

For updates sync 2 needs fat32

For sync 3 updates exFAT

No idea. just relaying what Ford calls out. It is also recommended to the dealership to have a 32GB or larger drive

Interesting.... Fat32 should be fine... exFat should be ok as well.. either one will work...

ExFat has the advantage of being able to store any single file larger than 4GB.... the DIY online manual from myfordsync recommends 4GB or bigger USB drive...

I wonder if the Ford techs have a different upgrade path...

Good information! Thank you.

Yes the procedure for a customer to update sync through the sync my ride website is different than at the dealership.

There are two portions of the APIM. VIP (Vehicle interface protocol) and CIP (customer interface protocol) the sync my ride website will only update the CIP but the dealership can update the VIP. the VIP does not have may updates.

When the dealership performs an update the IDS (scan tool) and PTS (fords dealership website) is used to perform the update.

I don't know why I assumed the maps auto-update? I purchased my 2013 about 8 months ago and the maps seem to be pretty up to date. I drove to a funeral a couple of months ago and the software knew about road construction going on that had just started. When the "Sync is performing a scheduled update" message comes on, does it not update the maps, then?

The maps are updated periodically by Ford. I've done two updates in the last two and a half years of ownership. The road construction warning is part of the Live Traffic service, which is built into most newer GPS systems.

So, what is the $150/year number posted above referencing?

it costs 150 bucks to buy the disc for my 2010 sho in order for me to update my maps. I'm assuming that's 150 every year for updates
