My car has been making a rattling noise on startup that I, along with a technician I work with, attributed to the front bank chain tensioner. Last night it escalated into a death rattle while driving about 30 mph. Got the POS towed to my shop, and pulled the cam cover off the front. Did I find a messed up chain tensioner? Nope. Everything looks great. Chain is tight, tensioner looks great. I am about to burn my pile to the ground.

Noise travels, unfortunately. Take a listen on the bottom end, or pull the oil pan.

Cam chain rattle can be "felt" with your fingertips on the bulged area on the cam covers.

Do some real careful listening with a mechanic's stethescope (or a long screwdriver). I would also suggest taking the oil pan off to check the rod bearings.

It runs while rattling, and the oil light never came on. Wouldn't spun bearings restrict oil flow? I will take the pan off and look, that was my next step.

Rod Bearing Destroyed

Well, I got everything apart. The 4th bearing back from the crank is toast. It is just completely ruined. Now I need to find out if my crank is junk, which will cause me to consider my whole FU$%ING CAR junk....
