Hey Everyone,

I initially thought I might be able to get away with just replacing the clutch in my SHO and swapping out the Mobil 1 ATF for the GM Syncromesh fluid. Tonight I crawled under the car to change my oil and saw the trans has started leaking worse than it was before. I even checked the fluid, and it's a little low.

It looks like a majority of the leak is coming from where the rod shifter goes into the trans, as everything in that area is soaked, and the shifter and support rod are coated with fluid their entire length. The underside of the car is also wet behind the trans.

Has anyone else had this problem? My trans never leaked a drop until I installed Mobil 1, and all it has done since is get worse and worse. jpshakeh

What are my aftermarket rebuild kit options, since nothing's available from Ford any more? If I'm going to rebuild it, I want to replace as much as I can...

Thanks a lot for any info!

Sounds like the shift shaft seal. Not too difficult to replace.

From SHO NUT's site (www.shonutperformance.com):

Tranny gear selector input seal E43Z-7288-A 6.73

Good luck! beer

Is this something that requires the trans to be entirely taken apart, or is there an access plate that you can unbolt to reach the seal?

I added topped off the trans tonight, and it took a whole QUART of fluid! I guess it wasn't just a little low. headbang

I really hope I didn't damage anything in there - what do you guys think? It still shifts the same as it always has (notchy), and didn't change when I added the fluid. It's just scary thinking our transmissions are lubricated merely by throwing the fluid around, and mine only had 2 out of 3 quarts to do it with...

take your shift rod off and stabilizer arm then you shoud use a special tool it looks like a dent puller with jaws to grab the end of the round seal outer rim. remember to clean the rod going into your trans with scotch bright or light sand paper so the new seal does not get damaged when you install it. be carefull to use a correct size hollow dowel to tap back in straight

My car has been leaking in the same area ever since I had the tranny rebuilt. Got a replacement seal and made sure the shaft was clean and smooth, and reinstalled the new seal. Popped my head under there again the other day and the new seal is also leaking in the same spot. It's not a terrible leak, but everytime the rod shifter moves back and forth a little more fluid is leaking out.
