My coolant situation, strange to say the least.

About a thousand miles ago, I had a bunch of work done on my SHO, including upper & lower radiator hoses and a new thermostat installed. Prior to this, I had only experienced a slight leak at the upper radiator hose, my temp gauge was consistently at the R when the engine was warmed up, and the low coolant light never came on.

Not long after the work was done, I developed a coolant leak on the passenger side. Pressure tested the system, no leaks were found. Replaced the radiator cap though because it was old. Either coolant was leaking at the cap or the overflow has a leak.

Not long after this, a leak developed on the driver side, a steady drip-drip-drip right towards the front of the engine. So, I would check the radiator everyday (it was always to the max) and I'd top off the coolant overflow bottle.

This only seemed to make matters worse, so I decided to stop adding coolant to the overflow bottle. Sure enough, both leaks stopped and I have not smelled that nasty coolant smell in my SHO since. I check the radiator daily now and add a very small amount of coolant every morning to top it off. My temp gauge is on the R sometimes, and sometimes it's in the middle, and sometimes it's around A.

Sometimes I can hear coolant sloshing (sounds like water flowing) around the system, and I never heard that on any car I ever owned, so I don't know what to think about that, or the fact that my temp fluctuates so much. I don't think I have any more coolant leaking but I must because I put in some new coolant everyday and the coolant overflow bottle is nearly empty.

Given all this info, does anyone have any idea what's going on with my coolant system?

Oh, and I don't think coolant is getting in my oil, because the oil level is consistent and don't see it when I check (visual and smell) the oil and nobody ever says anything about it having coolant in the oil when I get the oil changed.

SHO, gotta love it! :thumb:

Thanks!

One other thing too.

When I had the thermostat replaced recently along with lots of other work, the cost for the thermostat was not on my final invoice so I asked the mechanic if he really did or forgot to do it. He swears he installed it and just forgot to invoice it. I took him at his word, and even told him that if he forgot to do it, it would be OK, but I just needed to know so I could have it done. He swears he did it, but now, I'm not so sure.

Sure it's not the radiator tanks leaking? They tend to leak when NOT under pressure. Heat and pressure in the system makes the the plastic tanks seal better on the aluminum radiator.

I suppose that could be it but the driver side leak stopped when I stopped adding coolant to the overflow bottle. Would having less coolant in the whole system (radiator and overflow bottle) like that cause a radiator leak to just stop?

Unlikely if you're topping off the rad, anyway.

It might also be important to know exactly what t-stat your guy thinks he installed. If it doesn't have a jiggle valve, or if it's not in the 12 o'clock position, it might be having trouble purging any air remaining in the system (which -might- explain the noises you're hearing).

Give the upper rade hose a few squeezes when cold with the rad cap off and see if it burps at all.

I'll give that a try and see if it burps like you said, and maybe also have the thermostat replaced again with the right one and ensure it's installed properly. I don't really need my money anyway! ;)

You will not have trouble purging the air out of any cooling system as long as it is sealed and not leaking when hot or cold. No jiggle valve is needed on the V6 SHO motor. as long as all is good. May take a couple three heat/cool cycles but it will naturally purge the air out of the system.

My radiator leaked a huge puddle of anti freeze at the gas station 5 minutes from my house. It could not find a leak at any other time or place. A new $80 radiator goes in this weekend.

+ 1 for a radiator problem too. Had the same issue w/the leaking randomly. 2 hours and a new radiator later, no more leaks and it stays nice and cool, like me!

I BUY NO MEANS KNOW ALOT ABOUT THESE CARS...i recently bought one and starting to restore the motor! But some things you figure out...
I had the same problem...there is a heater hose that runs from the heater core to a metal tube (book calls it hot water heater tube) that has a pressure fitting on the end of it...(metal fitting crimped onto rubber heater hose) that runs to the motor. Mine leaked so slowly at first I couldnt fine the leak. Then the fitting really rusted up and started to cause steam. Thats the only reason I found it. Mine is a 93 3.2...to see the problem i had to stand on the drivers side of the motor...find the heater core tubes on the firewall...grab the second one and trace it back...
