Yep, you guessed it: rust, Left rear fender by the bottom of the bumper. Anyone have any sugestions on fixing it and doing it right? I'm not talking touch up paint. I'm talking prime, sand and paint so it looks professional.

I have lots of time, and an air spray gun.

For the time being where can I get the black fittings that secure the bumper?

are you talking about the xmas tree clips? the little black that hold the bumper cover on? you can get them from a parts store, or a body shop even an upholstery supplier usually has them.

minnesho,

Thats exactly what I'm talking about. I broke a few trying to see how bad the rust was. Thanks for the info. How cheap are we talking?? It's all surface rust.

I did lots of body work on my old 92 corolla then had it painted. There were too many rust spots I had to get the whole thing painted.

First either sand or grind all the rust out so that only bare metal is showing. Then spray the metal with some rust inhibitor. Then if you need to, bondo it smooth. After the bondo dries, sand it down smooth so that it follows the contour of the body panel. Then prime, and paint. Hopefully the color will match good.

To do it right, the entire rear fender needs to be cut out, replaced with new metal(welded) and re finished. My history with "surface" rust is a surface repair will net you a year or two before the rust comes back. Mine is in right now being fixed the right way for about $500 - it was $300 two years ago to do it the wrong way.

however, doing it yourself is an even better way to go...
