NoSho - that's very impressive work. How did you figure out the mods to the EATCs? I assume you have the electrical schematics for them?

The rewiring was necessary because the 1999 Expedition display board that I used for the conversion has completely different ribbon cable wiring than the Taurus or Continental EATCs. Not a single pin in the ribbon cable is the same, and in fact there are two less wires, because two of the keyboard matrix buttons run over the same wires in the ribbon as the signal wires for the display. I didn't anticipate this when I bought the unit, but I made it work. One nice thing is that whereas bulbs on the 1996-1997 EATCs are still socketed with holes on the display board, the 1999 board had the bulbs soldered directly onto the surface of the board (making it near impossible for the average user to replace bulbs of course, but making it easier for me to solder the LEDs on.)

ah, interesting. i've done a few conversions, very first one in my 93 has a 95 hard button main board(some nice ***** bashed in the face) and just did a cable swap with i beleive a 95-6 grand marquis face. must have lucked out is just swapped over. i have a, i think, 95-96 continental main board that i've herd works in the sho but i can't get it to.. maybe you could help as i can no long find the EATC's in the junkyard that i need. i see that nearly 99% of the wire contacts are the same on the back of the unit but 2 need to be reversed if i remember right. thing is i get no illumination, nothing. only thing that works is the blower when i reverse the wires...

anywhoo nice work buy the way. i always wanted to do that in red. have a red digitial dash, ect.... :thumb:

Probably no one except a few Ford engineers have schematics. I had to reverse engineer both units and trace the entire circuits out.

Here's a quickie on the 1993-6 unit's ribbon cable pinout, the other information I know about the unit operation wouldn't be much use to most:

Pin - description
1 - ground
2 - ground
3 - keyboard matrix row 4 (+) - floor, max AC, tied to ground w 10K [ASIC pin 15]
4 - keyboard matrix row 3 (+) - off, flr/def, outside temp, tied to ground w 10K [ASIC pin 14]
5 - keyboard matrix row 2 (+) - auto, pnl/flr, hot, tied to ground w 10K [ASIC pin 13]
6 - keyboard matrix row 1 (+) - def, cold, vent, tied to ground w 10K [ASIC pin 12]
7 - keyboard matrix row 3 (-) - off, auto, def [ASIC pin 11]
8 - keyboard matrix row 2 (-) - flr/def, flr, pnl/flr, vent [ASIC pin 10]
--
9 - illumination
10 - keyboard matrix row 1 (-) - hot, outside, cold, a/c [ASIC pin 9]
11 - VFD anode signal, pin 38 [ASIC pin 31]
12 - VFD anode signal, pin 37 [ASIC pin 29]
13 - VFD anode signal, pin 35 [ASIC pin 28]
14 - VFD anode signal, pin 36 [ASIC pin 27]
15 - VFD grid drive
16 - VFD cathode filament drive

When replacing that EATC, where did you get that newer looking one?I have seen in grand marqi's the same EATC design and I wounder if it would fit.

.......... now all i need is for someone to reprogram the processor on these things to say SHO instead of OFF and have the outside temp work like it does in newer cars, as in it stays on untill turned off or another button is pushed.

You can jumper a solder trace on the back of te EATC board then install a maintained switch to select between ambient and EATC setting.

Look under EATC on the page linked to through PICS

good luck.. if it could have been done it would have been already. i don't think anyone has access to a EATC programer to actually change the programming of the VFD to say SHO. would be sweet if they did. i for one would like to see SHO instead of off myself.

I know it's been a while, but I wanted to see if anyone figured out how to make the display say "SHO" yet. I too will pay for instructions on how to do this!!
