I have a leaking radiator which I need to replace. My transmission was rebuilt with a Transgo kit about 25K and runs great. I have not modified the stock coolers or lines in anyway. I would like to bypass the radiator and use either the factory cooler or a HD cooler from MidwestSHO that I have lying on my shelf for 3 years. I know that larger 3/8” lines are the biggest improvement.

However, my transmission always runs on the cold side. It barely gets to 100 degrees in cooler weather and 150 in warmer weather after lots of in-town driving. Highway is a little lower. I did get it over 220 on the track at the 05 convention, but that was extreme conditions. I know several people block their ATX coolers in the winter, but I never seem to get very high temperature readings. My gauge probe is mounted in the test port on top of the transmission.

Do I need to put an oil thermostat inline with my cooler when I junk the factory lines or just cover up the cooler in colder weather?

Eric,

It depends on how much money you want to spend. If you can afford the paltry expenditure, then I would recommend dropping some cash for a nice, inline thermostat. This will make for a nice, permanent installation that you won't have to think about while only claiming a little bit of mess and installation time up-front. If you would rather not bother with researching, purchasing, and installing an inline thermostat, then you can alway persue the nearly-free and Nimz-recommended "cardboard blocking" solution.
