Hey,
I was curious if anyone else has ever had their mufflers rust out on the tops. I can't seem to understand why it happened, but my mufflers are basically shot. I'm trying to decide how to replace them at the moment.

Hey,

The most common cause of muffler rust is inactivity. If your car spends extended periods sitting, say over a week, it becomes more prone to rust in the exhaust system. It will also lead to premature muffler bearing failure. When you replace the mufflers tell the guy at the store you want mufflers with grease fittings.

Look on the bright side. You picked just about the cheapest part on your sho to ruin.

Bah!

Short trips that allow condensation in the exhaust but don't get it hot enought to evaporate the moisture.

Greaseable muffler berings are the best, tho!

I stand corrected. Short trips less than maybe 10 minutes are even worse than sitting ans not running at all, even if you do have greasable muffler bearings. Just make sure you use the hi-temp muffler grease.

all B.S. aside, I would look at this as a great opportunity to upgrade your exhaust. I have been waiting for 7 years for my exhaust to fall off as I dont upgrade till something falls off.

Im thinking about a flowmaster setup myself.

While we're on the subject of exhaust, I guess I'll jump in here. I just picked up a '95 with an auto. The previous owner installed an exhaust. He simply said it was a Walker (which by definition means it will rust out in a year) and IMHO it sounds very rice-boy....kinda that fart pipe sound to it. I didn't look close enough yet to see if it was actually a Dynomax or not, but the fact is I'd like to change it.

Wondered what's out there for SHOs. I've been modding Mustangs for years and have done almost everything there is to do, but I'm new to the SHO scene. Obviously exhaust sound is a matter of personal taste, but I wanted to see what folks think. Oh, and to top it off, whatever hilljack shop installed the exhaust, did so with one tail pipe sticking out waaaay more than the other. Looks like crap.

Thanks for any opinions

PS. What ***** at Ford made the decision to put 6" wide wheels on the SHO?!!! Talk about a car that screams for 245 or 255 tires.

I'm basically posting to get peoples opinions, I have gutted cats and both of my mufflers are completely shot. It sounds ballsy though, I like it.
Anyways, I was wondering if this is causing a power loss.

The most common way for a sho muffler to go out is by it rusting on the top. As for the rims, try to put a 255 on the car. Some 225-60's rub on the front and in the rear(on Gen I's)

255 isn't going to fit on a 6" wide rim. The widest wheel/tire combo that I have heard of on an SHO would be 8" with a 245/45/17, but some people need spacers and/or fender trimming. I run 235/45/17 on a 17x7.5" rim with a 42mm offset.

when I was running my old SHOshop Y pipe with gutted cats, it sounded good. However, it was causing a serious loss of low end power. You will notice a difference with cats.

255mm tires should fit in the front with the right offset, it wont look pretty but will fit. Now I see no point in the rear but you would need to trim a lot to make them fit and proper wheel spacers to aviod rubbing the shock. My 235/40/18 fit no problem all around with 40mm offset on the rims, my next set I am defitnaly going up to 245mm all around.

So from what you are saying, having gutted cats AND two shot muffs are causing my power loss?

Not really power as in torque loss, you may have actually gained about 2-4HP at the topend of the powerband but lost a good amount of Torque due to decreased back pressure.
