I already posted this a while back, but its time for the better story

Fun story that cost me alot: I was on the freeway on my way to sell a RC car of mine, and in my miror i saw a red Ford GT gaining on me. I stared at it in wonder as the other people keeping speed with it did too. Once it caught me (not too long) it slowed to my speed and was beside my taurus. I wasnt sure if he was looking at it or what he was doing, the windows were too tinted. So i droped it into 4th and brought it to 6k and then into 5th and as i pushed past 100mph i saw him pass me full bore. In a flash after that still WOT the large explosion came. The oil covered the pavement and i knew i was donefore. The car still drove me to my shop where it lays today, almost a month since the event, and the only thing i know is i have a 3 inch by 3/4 -1 inch tall hole above an unknown sensor on the tranny. Then while im checking this a guy comes in and the first words out of his mouth were "S-H-O havent seen one in a while". He came in for some parts on his mustang but claimed to own a SHO of his own. He told me that 5th gear is worthless under hard driving. Its only good for gas mileage. He said that they are destroyed when they are driven that way.

For my questions, Is 5th gear ok to drive hard in?
Then everyone said to get a new tranny. Should a used one be ok? I talked to a tranny shop and they said for the SHO's tranny it would be $2300
to fix it if it was the differential pin, and if I welded the case myself. If i get a used one with unknown life, i dont want to do this over again. Ive found some low as $120 with lots of ???? and 400 with a general knowlege of its life and 900 with paperwork on it saying its good.

Any questions or comments are apreciated thanks for reading

Keep the SHO on the road

Well, if it's been sitting a month, I'd wager that it isn't a daily driver.

On driving hard in 5th gear...
I think that the guy meant that the car isn't really raceable in 5th gear, which is true. If anything, you stand the least chance of damaging anything in 5th gear.

My recommendation on replacement? Grab one of the used ones and make sure the pins are still intact (looking in from the pass side axle hole will tell you if they're there or not), and that it shifts smoothly. Then do a search here for replacement procedures. There are a bunch. Obv. you have a better chance with a lower mileage unit over a high mileage unit.

That's what I would do if it were me. Good luck, either way.

$2300 IS A RIP OFF, PERIOD! I don't know where you went but, any tranny shop you call around here will say $700 labor(you pull tranny) or $1200 labor(they pull) and on manual trannies you only replace what needs to be replaced not like an auto where you have various rebiuld kits. If I were you I would buy a used one(should have at least a 30 day warrenty) pull it apart and inspect internals(bearings, synchro's, bocking rings, etc), replace diff. rollerpins and have fun. If you are unsure as to how to inspect/dismantle the tranny(shonut performance has an excellent how to video) My opinion.

ill buy that video. and the 2300 is from the only tranny shop that has handled a sho tranny and has knowlege. Not going that route though, the tanny's case is a gonner so ill be looking for a used tranny.
