MTX Tranny Question

Hey,
I noticed today while browsing "SHO NUT" that he is calling the synchronizers for the 5-speed manual obsolete. He is selling block rings as the main rebuild part. Am I correct in thinking that although block rings will allow you to shift quicker they have a much shorter lifespan in comparison to synchronizers?? I will have t rebuild my 5-speed in my 89' soon as it is getting increasingly hard to shift into third and second without really grinding bad. I have resorted to double clutching but the problem is especially bad for second. When I think about block rings I picture the racing manual Trans where rebuilds are common place.

My other question is he says the synchronizers are obsolete, why is that? Are they being discontinued? The MTX SHO's originally had synchronizers right?

MTX SHO's use both blocking rings and synchros. He is not selling the synchros anymore because Ford has discontinued them. There are other companies out there that make them for the SHO. Ask around, I'm sure someone has a link for a site that sells them.

BTW, the above answer is correct - we can't get any more of the synchros because Ford has made them obsolete., so we are selling from a limited supply I have left.

Thanks for the info. My only other question is since the synchronizers are no longer available, when this finite supply runs out can these MTX Trans be run purely on block rings? headbang

As for why the synchros and gears and bearings, oh heck let's go a step further...the head gaskets, overhaul gasket sets, throttle body gasket, manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, primary to plenum gaskets, butterfly gaskets, IAB/ISC gaskets, fuel injector o-rings, water pump o-ring, the list could go on and on for days (not literally, but almost).....Why are all these obsolete????

Because it's FOMOCO and they can, that's why. If you really want to know why, give Ford Motor Company a call and find out. If you get further than we have with them then we'd love to hear about that as well. It sucks, but parts being obsolete is a way of life now for us. Better get used to it. I'm just thankful that we have people looking for alternative parts that can be used.

um, the blocking rings fit inside the synchros ... both are required to make the tranny work.

You may want to pick up a copy of our MTX rebuild video from our website to learn more about the tranny's internals.

The synchros will last the life of the tranny if you don't grind the gears. The more worn the blocking ring is, the eaiser it is to grind the gears. Most people will keep grinding the gears to the point that the synchro is ruined, and since it is obsolete, they are screwed ..

The correct thing to do is to replace the blocking ring (the wear part) when it is worn and causing a mild grinding if you are not careful BEFORE you wreck the synchros by repeatedly grinding them on the gears ...

Thanks for all the info. I'll replace the block rings on my Trans soon then! The rebuilt will not be a problem for me considering my father is an older racer. He used to work for Penske Racing and Mclaren Racing. He built the engines that won the Indy 500 in 1979 and 1981 for Rick Mears. He also built the engines that one the Formula 1 World Championship.

My 89' SHO's my baby so I'll make sure and make replacing those block rings a priority.

I just got a whole upper gasket set for my 91. It had all of these. I got it from napa and it seemed to be just as good as stock. $150 IIRC. But you're saying that no aftermarket company sells, or makes, synchros?

That's correct. Up to now, no company is known to make aftermarket synchro's. Which is a shame, because we really need them!

Did they say that they are making their own run of synchros for our car? I'd be wary of anything made like that, especially since they aren't tested. I for one wouldn't want to pull my tranny again just to find out the part they made didn't work exactly like it's supposed to.
