MTX synchro's

How many of you have had to replace synchro's in your trannies? I've got a brand new clutch and I still have a hard time getting it in the gears. What's up??

Back in 98, when my 94 had 115,000 I needed a new clutch, and had the tranny rebuilt at the same time. Shifted smoothly after that, until recently when it got a bit choppy again. Last weekend, me and Fred Hurder replaced my tranny mount, which was nearly split in half. Car shifts nice and smooth again. It's something to check into, and you can visually check the tranny mount by looking at it. It is located between the body and the subframe, directly behind the drivers side tire. Not the easiest of items to change either, as Fred will testify to I'm sure.

Wow, ironic! I came here looking for synchro replacement information, and here it is! Top topic.

I'm assuming this requires a tranny drop? How hard is it to get these replaced? Is it a day job, a weekend job, more?

It involves dropping the tranny, and rebuilding the internals. Not fun. Good luck.

i just did a tranny that had (badly) worn synco's, they can devolop ridges that impead smooth movement on the top and the bottom of the hub. shonutt sell replacements, no doubt. it could be a DIY if you had the big Helm manual. however, like Rob94 sugested it could be something alot simpler, check the shift linkage too.

at the begining summer i'm going to look into appling a perminate lubricant (dry film?) and perhaps a polish job to the working surfaces of the syncro's. all in an attempt get faster/"cleaner" shifting.

Ken, when the clutch was replaced did they change the tranny fluid ? If you took it somewhere its ususally not in to books to change it unless you ask.

The fluid was changed and synthetic was put in by Eric at Rickety Enterprises. He suggested switching back to regular fluid before doing anything else, so I'll try that and see what happens. the funny thing is I just bought another 95 MTX and it shifts exactly the same way so it must be a common problem, whatever it is.

See the syncro problem that I have, is that if I slow down in 3rd gear to a stop. I CAN NOT get it back out of gear untill I start to move again. It is a physical thing. I acctually have to launch in 3rd gear before I can pull the shifter outta 3rd. Also 4th has become increasingly hard to get into, lots of grinding when it pops out, cause it isnt lined up properly.

Hey Corey, glad to hear you're getting your hands dirty working on SHOs. About that polishing the syncros, don't they need friction to work properly? Think of them as small clutches, if too slick, they can't speed up/slow down the mating gears.

Im not saying that your mechanic did this but i would check the fluid your self and see if its new.... because i got tricked into thinking it was the syncros on my car after a clutch change, he SAID he changed the fluid with synthtic!!! what a JOKE! and it did the same thing your car does shift like crap so i checked the fluid my self and it was the SAME OLD SHIT. Old trans fluid will make the car shift bad .... if he really did change it an you check it and it is new well im not really sure then but i say check the fluid on both cars its really easy!!!!
