MTX Rebuild?

I have a spare manual transmission that I want to rebuild. I know that all the synchros have have been discontinued and hard to come by. My question is what can I do to do a "rebuild" with the current supplies available? I want to weld the diff in the process also. Are there any seals or bearings that I can replace? Or is everybody just throwing in new axle seals and calling it good? I have found a new pair of blocking rings from 1st to 4th gears I thought about replacing if necessary. Tranny has about 120,000 miles on it.

I would replace the bearings and blocking rings. The synchros seem to hold up well. I would get Josh (SHONut) video. You will also need a shim selector tool in order to properly shim the transmission.

I have been pondering this question as well, is there a "go to guy" in the community that rebuilds the MTXs?

Does anyone have a complete list of what bearing and seals I need with part numbers? I look at rockauto and get confused because I do not know what I am looking at. I just want to use this as a learning experience.

Get the SHO NUT VIDEO!!!!

Most of the parts are long obsolete. At 120K, this is what I would do.
Complete disassembly of the tranny.
Throughly clean and inspect every part.
Take extra time with the 3rd and reverse gears. These seem to have the most abuse.
Replace the diff roll pins.
Reinforce "weld" the diff pinions in place.
Install a new quill sleeve for the TOB.
Reassemble the tranny with new seals (input shaft, axle shafts, shift selector shaft).
Only use Anerobic for the case half's. NO RTV!!!

Did this almost a year ago. Here is the thread with some of the pictures. Look for burring on the inside of the synchro sleeves; that is what causes difficulty shifting.

Also a good time to install a drain plug. Check the bearings very closely for wear and replace as necessary. RCM automotive has a seal kit with the shift shaft, input, and both axle seals for around $30 IIRC.

If I disassemble the tranny do I have to re-shim it when I put it back together? I ask this because I have been told if I use the same differential I do not to re-shim it.

If the bearing have not been changed on the diff, you should not need to shim the diff.

The improved axle seal would be ordered for a 1999-2003 Windstar 3.8 application. Works great on the drivers side, the passenger side jack shaft needs a little modification but has worked on mine (you have to cut the plastic ring off). These new seals are triple lip, higher quality compared to the double lip BRS50 Motorcraft ones and ride on slightly different, usually unworn/unpitted portions of the CV or jack shafts.

Roll pins- should be able to get various sizes from a good hardware store. Can also try going to a transmission repair shop and seeing if they can sell you some.

Only time you will need to re-shim is if you change a bearing, swap out a shaft, or put a different diff in. If bearings show any sign of wear, make sure to replace them. Do you know any history on the transmission? like if it made any noises before being pulled?

I also found This link to be very helpful.. learned a few things from it- like how they measure bearing pre-load; which is ideal for any bearing EXCEPT the diff (as it is press fit in pretty tight).

Edit: bearings are expensive and rarely fail; unless deprived of lubrication. Don't replace them unless they are worn. Its usually nice to test-drive a transmission and check for noises before dismantling so you know what to be looking for once its apart.
