I feel kinda silly posting a transmission question, but I will anyways.

On my 93 MTX I have been having a terrible time getting it into gear. When I approach a light I always go to neutral. Well, lately it will be difficult to go into first when I pull away. Sometimes I must go into second and then up into first. It is a 50/50 thing. Alot of the time it is ok, but the other 50% or the time it will be very difficult to engage. Almost like a double notch going in to first. 1/2 way up and then engaged. The only thing I can tell the changes is that when warm ( 20 minute drive or longer ) the problem almost dissapears. But when cool, it is surely there. I also notice that in the morning, it will be very difficult to get into any gear. Once I do, it goes back to only first being difficut.

History on the car is that the previous owner had his clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and flywheel replaced at ford. ( He paid $1600  ) The clutch does grab well, and I hear no throw out bearing noise. The clutch has been overheated one time when I let an emplpoyee drive.

I just do not want to pull down a transmission and expect to install a clutch kit, only to find out that I need transmission work. If that were the case, I may just contact Bizzy, as the parts for this transmission seem to be kinda scarce.

Ok, Let me have it.

Transmission fluid in clean and full. Clutch is adjusted. Forgot to mention that clutch was replaced 10k ago.

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's right. It sounds like the TOB, or it may be the blocking rings.

Reading through your question, it sounds less like a clutch or fluid level problem and more like a fluid type problem. I'm certainly no expert, but you don't mention at all that your tranny grinds as you try to shift, only that it is difficult to shift into gear - especially when the fluid is cold. Is this correct?

There are a couple recent post pertaining to similar problems, and IIRC they were somewhat resolved with a change to a different fluid type. I.E. "Redline" vs. "Royal Purple" vs ATX fluid etc...

Good luck figuring this one out! :thumb:

Are you able to shift fine when you first start it in the morning and the difficulty in shifting begins after the car has been driven a while? Those were my symtoms for a bad throw out bearing. Crud built up on the quill the bearing rides on. As it got heated the more difficultly in shifting. If I had it in first at the light I would feel a slight pulse from the drive line because the clutch was not fully disengaging.
I run Redline D4 in my tranny. Many here in the past were happy with GM syncromesh.

It is just the opposite. Hard when cold, easy when hot.

it's that fluid. Mercon III is spec'ed and V is not recommended. just put some cheap 1.50/qt fluid in and see if it changes.

Or Mobil1. I myself can't stand synchromesh but there are those out there that swear by the stuff. Each trans is different to be honest, they all have their own personalities. If you do end up needing me you know where to find me. ;)

I can attest to that. Tried syncromesh, took it out and put in regular Dex III after my clutch replacement, 4th gear ground. Took out that dex III, added more to flush out an crap. Still ground. Took out and put in Mobil I. Not chunking as much, but it's still there. I would switch back to synchromesh but I have a tranny rebuild coming up...

I agree with the others that you need to try different fluid. I can only speak for myself and I am happy with the Redline D4. I have used it exclusively since my Quaife install 7 years ago.

Well, last night I put in GM Syncromesh. It was around $60.00 for three quarts but it seems to work much better. I drove around in alot of city traffic last night and only once did she seem to bind going into first. That is the good news.

The not so good is that the old fluid had a slight trace of glitter to it. I imagine it is only going to be a matter of time.
