MTX Question

95 mtx recently bought 53,000 new rod shifter/bushing/ball and socket everything greased and working good. Changed the fluid with mobil 1 ATF and now getting into 1st gear is tough it almost wants to go but stops just short. with a little force it will go this does this 50% of the time. I have read that different trannies like different fluid. With that said I was wondering if this is common? Was thinking about trying the ford honey to see how that performs. Wanted to know what you guys thought about the honey stuff or even a slightly thicker oil. The 1st gear seems to be tough wether it is hot or cold any suggestions?

If mobil1 had a negative impact, try regular old store brand ATF. but if it's not ATF, do NOT put it in your transaxle. This means no "ford honey" or whatever additives are jumping off the shelves at you.

Mobil 1 is pretty thin. Many have had good luck with Vavoline Mec/Dec or Maxlife. With these transmissions it varied by unit what fluid they like. If you havent installed a drain plug yet I would suggest you do.

Also, It may be that the clutch is starting to let go. Worn TOB finger can cause this problem.

I don't guearantee it's even a problem, either. Several of the SHOs I've had have done this. It doesn't happen all the time, but whenever I feel the shifter hit "the wall" before it's in gear, I just drop it into second and slide it back up to first and it always goes right in.

I had this problem with the last trans I had in my 92 - it turned out that one of the input shaft bearings was spalling, so sometimes when you pushed in the clutch the input shaft would stop very quickly - if I didn't get it into 1st very quickly, it might or might not go, depending on how the gear teeth aligned when it stopped.

try shifting into 1st more quickly after you depress the clutch - if that makes it better, I would suspect a bad bearing in the trans.

As far as the clutch goes it seems ok, as for the TOB I have no idea. It has to be the stock clutch. When I do hit that so called wall in 1st I have been dropping down into 2nd gear and then back to first and it seems to work fine. I am going to try to get into 1 faster and see if that helps. But it seems like once it is in 1 it will go out and back in with no problems. I only have like 75 miles on it since the fluid change and the oil that did come out of the car was dirty...very dirty. Wondering if i should flush it again I know that I am going to have to do the drain plug for sure. Also wanted to know about the honey because I ran that in my csvt and had good results but different transmissions give you different results

It is most likely some sort of clutch issue,M1 worked great in every MTX I've put it in.

It is not unusual to have to put it in 2nd to get it to go into 1st easily. It is not likely to be a problem with the ATF as Mobil 1 ATF has been a preferred and very successful fluid in these trannies for eons. You *may* have a clutch issue but most likely there is nothing wrong with your tranny. If you haven't yet, try adjusting the clutch by pulling up on the clutch pedal with your toe underneath it.
