That is a good article. I did make my set up less restrictive with large diameter piping with DP's and mid pipe set up. Removing the 3rd cat and stock resonator coupled with large piping did pick up power. There is something to be said there.

Will adding an X pipe increase exhaust velocity and pick up more power? There truly is only one way to find out. Is it something I want to test? Yes. However, with my new project it will get put on the back burner for a bit.

Scavenging only really works with pulses. If cyl 6 fires after cyl 2 and meets in a x pipe right behind it then the vacuum or void behind cyl 2 exhaust pulse will pull cyl 8 pulse. For that to even work you need equal distance runners from both head banks. But our turbos stop all (or most) the pulses at the turbine. Those pulses drive the turbine and are used up there, 1st law of thermo. The best turbo exhaust is no exhaust. You want nothing slowing down the exhaust moving past the already existing choke point being a turbo and resisting the movement of the turbine.
I honestly would not join the two exhaust pipes on our cars at all if I wanted the purest form of power. I would not risk possible flow back up or something. But the sound resonance is greatly reduced when joining them so I give power for that.

Super interested in that. I've been eyeballing Lexus for a few years.
Yeah, the deal came up and I couldnt pass on it. I have wanted this car for awhile now. I will post about when I clean it up and dive into it. I really like it.

MRT axle-back installed!

[MINI-REVIEW (UPDATED):]

This was my most wanted, immediate mod—a throatier exhaust. My Gen.4 SHO's exhaust is still 100% stock except for the MRTs. First impressions: Sounds great at idle [edit: on cold start-up]! Notable low-frequency rumble with an very satisfying post-ignition gurgle when down-shifting or dropping revs—no pops or farts between shifts either. Almost forgot to mention: No drone, at least to my ears. If there is any, I didn't seem to mind it because I don't even remember hearing any (I'm sure there is some). In fact, if there is any drone, I must've really liked it (FYI: my Magnaflow-equipped 4.6L DOHC Marauder droned quite a bit, but I don't recall minding that either). I think any audible drone ranged between ~800-1,000RPM, but I'll re-check more carefully tomorrow.

UPDATE: Drone-check! Re-checked the drone today—it's about at 1,000-2,200RPM and it's pretty there. But as I said, I don't even mind it—in fact, I very much like it. To me, drone is only annoying if it's at cruising-speed on a long, highway-trip in high-gear; e.g., ~2,000-2,200RPM. Haven't had it on the highway yet, but I don't think it's that audible once the car heats up.

Unfortunately, upping the revs produces a more refined sound (read: kind of "not loud"). Yeah, a little too quiet under acceleration, and while the difference from stock is 200% improved (500% at idle on cold-start), the exhaust is still far softer than I'd like; though, I've yet to hear it from the street on a full-throttle drive-by (e.g., I should do a drive-by recording inside the 2nd street "Blade Runner" tunnel in Downtown L.A.). But overall, I really like its sonic character—just needs more volume. While still a far cry from a bone-stock Mustang five-point-oh, I think the SHO's more exotic, Euro sonic-signature complements the SHO's understated aesthetic nicely and I'm still very pleased with the purchase. Also, the "Black-Ops" tips look f'ing great on a black SHO.

MRT-install photos:

Went to a new shop which did a pretty nice job on all the welding, fitment, and overall installation (Performance Muffler, Hawthorne, CA). Note that only the MRT tips are black—the mufflers and lead-in piping are all silver (I spray-painted the entire exhaust in VHT high-temp paint. The can just says "black," but it dries in a more semi-matte finish, or satin-black. Also had them install the Whiteline anti-roll bar; though, I never did order the upgraded end-links. Next up: Install the PowerStop rotors + Motorcraft PP-pads I ordered a month ago, or decide on spending the coin and getting the fancy Rotora six-/four-piston calipers and rotors while still on sale. And lastly, order my SCT Livewire TS+ and commission a custom AO-tune, and that's about it . . . until the next thing.
