So I know nothing about stereos, speakers, subs, ohms etc ... just not my thing.

I do know that my rear sub is gone, it goes crackle crackle, all the time now and the bass is turned all the way down. I want a new sub so that I can enjoy my music again. I figured while I was at it, I would replace the back speakers. I do not want to replace the head unit, amps and all that stuff.

I was told by my local car audio shop that to replace my speakers, I would have to replace everything. Their reason, my stock system works off of either 2 or 8 ohms, and all the new stuff is 4 ohms. I would either blow the amp by drawing too much power, or blow the speakers because I am pushing too much through them.

HELP! Please ... What are they talking about? I wasnt planning on having them install, just wanted to buy from them or at least hear what they sound like before I buy online.

If someone wants to explain to me what I need, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if someone just wants to point me to a set of rear speakers and a sub, I would appreciate that as well.

Thanks!
Anthony

Your car audio shop is obviously preying on your lack of knowledge. In a setup like the stock SHO, there's not enough power going through it to cause a huge issue with impedance. Many people run 4 ohm speakers on the stock amplifiers with no problems, as well as the sub amp. Only thing is, the signal from the sub amp sucks, meaning it's gonna get "dirty" power to it....it'll work, but it won't be the beautiful sound it should be.

Either way, buy what you want and install it yourself, and don't listen to the nagging from that car audio shop.

No system works off of either 2 or 8 ohms...if the amp works on 2, then it can power anything 2 ohms and higher (2, 4, 8, 16, etc)

Sounds to me like they are trying to push you to try to buy either:
1) more stuff than you need
2) different equipment that probably costs more

You DO NOT need to replace everything...you can do certain components and not others. I have before with no problems.

Yeah thats big time BS. They are just trying to hook you into spending MO Money! You'll be fine with any speaker you put back there but one good thing to look for is the Sensitivity of the speaker you buy. The higher the number (91-98db) the easier it'll be for your amp or head unit to push. Thus producing more sound from the same power.

Amen to that. And dont hesitate to tell anyone who'll listen that they tried to screw you. Sorry but that ish just aint right. If they had've been upfront with you maybe they would've gotten a sale. Now they are not only losing a customer they might get flamed for it to

Alright, thanks for the advice.

I have no idea what 'dirty' power is ... but it does not sound like I need to worry about it.

I will go pick up some speakers/sub, not from that shop, and install.

Thanks!

I recently got new Blaupunkt's installed in two of my SHO's. It was recommended to run new wire since the gauge the factory used is pretty small.

Simply go buy the H/U you like, read up on the install manual, buy a FORD adapter at Radio Shack or any other car audio shop, read it's instructions.

Run the new wire to the back along the passenger side underneath the carpet and plastic trim pieces, pull them into the trunk in the middle underneath the rear seat (push back & pull up to unhook), mount your new speakers, sub, etc... check wires to assure your RR, RL, FR, FL are coming out of the right place, and voila' you'll be jambing mon!

I agree with everything being said here I used to install car stereos for a living..
You could even run house speakers wich run on 8 ohns where car speakers run at 4 ohms..
I have pioneer Head unit with 10" sub which i cut out factory enclosure and it sounds good considering factory speakers...
They say a bunch of fancy words to people whoo don't about those things and make it sound like they know what they are talking about..

Tell them to go play in the traffic
just replace what ever parts you need and you will be fine

Heck if you or anyone else is in ottawa ontario canada drop me a line I would be more than happy to help anyone with thier stereo !!!!!!!

Good Luck buddy
