Drove my 89 more today to see how it did. Once the car warms up, it runs horrible. At first when I let off the gas, the tach jumps all over the place and the engine misses; then it got progressively worse, missing all of the time and the tach was jumping around everywhere (car was bucking and jerking). Finally, as I was slowing to a traffic light, the red oil light popped on and off a couple of times (no knocks). It did that once more turning into my neighborhood 1 mile later.

I got it home and it had a horrible burnt oil smell and steam/smoke was coming out from the top center of the engine. It used to somewhat do this on a smaller scale before I worked on it, but it's worse now. I know that back valve cover is puking oil pretty badly.

The CEL does not come on. What in the world would cause this? I will say that I have not reinstalled the battery correctly in the tray in case I had to dis-assemble something again. The terminals are connected and it's just sitting in the battery area, which isn't smart probably. Could lose battery terminals cause all of this wackiness?

A helpful response would be appreciated.

To be fair, when I didn't have the rear bolt in my crossover tube, my car wouldn't run (unless I had the throttle open, and even then...barely) and the tach jumped around and did crazy shit.

PICNIC error?

Jumping tach? Check crank and cam sensor as you said you're leaking oil.

Battery? Not likely, but I think you already know how to address that problem.

Is it doing this? (Starts fine then runs like shit, also - Don't mind the tapping noise, thats the BBB's making noise.)

Ok, I owe Kevin Spann an apology. Sorry dude..I seriously thought you were being a smart ass b/c you were on a roll giving me crap in chat last night. :)

I put BOTH crossover tube bolts on TIGHT, I made sure the clamps on the crossover tube were TIGHT, re-tightened all 4 bolts on the DIS, and made sure the battery connections were good enough to keep the car running.....and I took it for a drive. Smooth as silk now. I guess these cars just need tweaking and adjusting after major work--that's why you should double check yourself when you're done.

I got it nice and warm, beat the snot out of it with a bunch of 7k RPMs and shifts, let my brother drive it and do the same, pulled in and even the oil burn smell wasn't bad and no "smoke". Guessing the crossover tube was lose and that blow by you get in the runners "leaked out" causing the smoke from the top.

I THINK it's fixed.....I just know it ran awesome now and I had a shit-eating grin on my face the whole time. I love my raggedy 89. :)

I think that's what it was, Tom. Going to take a break from it for awhile and do bearings and a top 60k this winter.
