I am nearing wits end with this car right now. I even went to the local VW dealer to price out a 1.8T Passat but I still love this damn money pit and want to fix it again. I will post whats been happening chronlogically and hopefully someone can shed more light....

8 months ago - I am on vacation in New York and I take a friend who owns a WRX out for a spin. Beautiful day out. Car drives fine to the local store. I come out to start it and it just cranks the whole time. The tach does more up to 500 ish when it cranks and I get no check engine light whatsoever. I checked all the underhood fuses and still nothing. Finally I disconnected the DIS module and let it sit for a minute. Plugged it back in and it started right up no problem

4 months ago - Same problem....Cranks but will not turn over. I remembered the DIS module and repeated the same as above. Car starts right up no problem. I priced out a new DIS and was told by the local dealer that they are $300+ so I hold off...

Last week - I posted this here before but I tried to clean my 12 year old motor up for Carlisle and got water in the plugs. I pulled the front 3 and cleaned them all out. I did not do the back yet because of difficulty in getting to them. Car started fine and I drove it for 30 min and a miss developed. I again took the plugs out and cleaned them even though they seemed dry. All the tips were white as well. I used a heat gun to attempt to dry out wny additional water. Drove the car home and it has a slight miss when over 3000 rpms which seemed to go away. My wife drove it out to Carlisle and said it seemed to stumble when cold but was fine the rest of the trip. I took some friend out on Sat night and at 55 mph the car just died completely. Pulled over, again unplugged the DIS and the car once again started right up and made it home fine

So today I took another drive to see how it feels and there again is a notable miss. I got 6 new plugs and am installing them this afternoon. I also made a hose that fits down in the well in an attempt to get any water/oil out of there.

So here is my dilemma. I used search and found that the DIS can get confused if the plugs are not firing correctly which seems very likely given the miss. Now it seems like the DIS works once I disconnect/reconnect it. Should I still replace it? Are the problems I had before the wash incident typical of DIS failure? I have read a lot about the Crank Position sensor but my tach does jump when trying to start the car which makes me think that may not be a problem.....Please save me from a life with a car payment and a boring Passat! Thanks

Anyone? 19 views an nobody can help? I replaced all 8 plugs and the DIS module and the car ran great but then all of a sudden started bucking and the Check Engine light came on. Dealer now has the car and they are telling me its going to need a cam sensor and crank sensor replaced...$700!!! Could this be right?

It's rare that DIS modules fail. Damage from bad motor mounts or misshandleing is the main failure mode, overheadting from dried out or missing heatsink compound is next. Without seeing you car and checking the stored codes I would say that your CPS is failing or your having fuel pump issues. The CID failing would not make it die AFAIK, just hard starting and no tach. You will pay out the ***** if you let the dealer do the work, it's not that hard to do yourself.
