I just completed drilling, tapping, and threading a drain plug in the bottom of my MTX, as well as replacing an axle seal that was leaking. It was a messy miserable job and I managed to get ATF all over me.. but in the end it was totally worth it.

If anyone does the drain plug install in the future, I recommend getting some liquid Teflon; much easier to apply to the threads of the drain plug than Teflon tape.

My transmission was shifting like crap, and it seems as though immediately after putting in Mobil1 Synthetic ATF the car shifts amazingly good now. I read that for most people it normally takes ~50 miles or so before any improvements can be noticed, but I noticed immediate improvement, and am eager to see what happens after 50 miles.

Although this stuff is fairly expensive (~$10/Litre CDN), it is very much worth it IMHO, and would personally recommend it! :thumb:

I still back everyone who says that each tranny its own taste in fluid. I had the tranny shop put M1 in mine when they did the clutch. two months before the clutch I put Valvolne Maxlife in mine and LOVED IT.

I'm thinking when I get the '93 on the road, I'm going to put in a drain plug and go back to the Valvoline.

Sounds like you had fun, I can't wait!! I just looove the smell of ATF fluid!!

yea, that pretty much describes it.

today I noticed that the gears shift in place smoothly, and engage firmly, its got a better feel to it now.

I used Mobile 1 ATF for years and though it was great...until I tried Castrol Domestic Multi-Vehicle ATF. I think its much better. After a few thousand miles, the mobile one tranny almost felt as if there was no fluid in it. The same tranny with castrol in it feels slick and even downshifting to 1st is smooth. Just my .02. I read about it in another thread and most people had the same concensus.

You probably noticed an immediate improvement(instead of having to wait ~50 miles or whatever...) because you were able to drain ALL of the old stuff out.

When my quaifed trans was installed on the 91, it had been suggested to me to use a 50/50 mix of regular ATF and Quick Shift or Trick Shift (sister companies make those). Well, it SUCKED! Within 500 miles my car was so hard to shift that at a stop light you could barely get it into 1st gear.

I drilled and tapped the trans and refilled it Mobil 1 synthetic. It was much better in comparison from the git-go, but it still took about 50 miles or so for it to get worked into the lining of the blocking rings. Within 100 miles it was like shifting through butter. That is why, even today, I highly suggest Mobil 1 to everybody who asks. There have been some to much prefer GM synchromesh and Royal Purple but I have never used them personally.

Glad to hear that Mobil 1 did the trick for you! :thumb:

Hmm.. looks like I might have spoke too soon :oogle:

Put some miles on it, now second started to give me a little bit of trouble.

for the first 1-2 shifts its a bitch getting into second.. like I throw it in second but it doesn't engage, sorta have to throw the shifter back and fourth a bit then force it into second. It gives an occasional grind, but once it warms up a bit smooth sailing.

I'm thinking sticking / bad second gear synchro?

It's tolerable right now; I'll keep driving it and see if it gets better or worse... all other gears are perfect, no grinding. If it gets worse when it get colder in a few months that wont be good.

That's what others have reported with the Mobil1. I ran it for a while, but didn't really have any problems. It seems like everybody that has used the Castrol stuff really likes it.

I remember I put in a drain plug and switched to Mobile 1 expecting a big improvement and was kinda dissapointed...seems like it was better with the old fluid (factory?). But that could just be hindsight. I drove it for 15-20k miles and replaced it with more Mobile 1, which has been a bit better this second time around. The gears are still pretty notchy though. I think I'll try Castrol next time.

I never liked the Mobil 1 ATF more than a few weeks. I run Redline D4 ATF now and like it just fine.

just finished my full drain and plug install today. filled with mobil 1 full synthetic and cruising at 75 was able to slide it right into third like it wanted to be in that gear. huge improvement compared to previous generic atf. i swear by mobil 1 products and will never use anything else. it is just night and day.

I'm running Penzoil Synchromesh in my MTX and couldn't be happier. Every shift is butter smooth, and other SHOwners who have driven my car have said the same.
