I've done a search and can't find much comparison info. What does anyone who has used Mobil 1 in the MTX think of it? Better than the regular ATF? How about compared to Synchromesh or Redline? I know the Mobil 1 is about half of the cost per qt (@ $5) of the GM stuff.

What's the suggestion. Has anyone come to a conclusion as to what REALLY is the best fluid for the MTX?

I think it's all personal preference. There isn't "one" fluid that's the best. I used mobil 1 and liked it a lot. I hear GM syncro mesh is good stuff for SHO's with brass syncros.

I was going to say something similar in another thread. Except it's more like it's personal preference of the blocking rings. The Synchros/blocking rings/gear mating surfaces rely on a certain degree of friction to work optimally. This obviously is going to differ between the newer and older style blocking rings (old style rings = less friction meaning the fluid needs to have a higher coefficient of friction. New style blocking rings = more friction meaning the fluid needs to have a lower coefficient of friction) but I bet that different patterns of wear between cars is going to create subtle differences and this is why we haven't been able to nail down one perfect combination that works great for everybody.

Don't use a Mobil 1 ATF in a newly rebuilt tranny. It's too slippery and you'll have a notchy shifter(it happened to me). I switched to Synchromesh and liked the results. Apparently you can get Pennzoil Synchromesh at some parts stores for less than half the price of that from the GM dealer. Nobody knows for sure if it's the same stuff as GM's but the results have been favorable.

The only thing that has been redone is the clutch. Now I don't know whether to use the Mobil 1 or Penzoil stuff, or regular old ATF. LOL

I'm assuming you are talking about the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. If you just changed the clutch there is nothing wrong with dumping a synthetic ATF in and it's up to you what fluid you want to put in. I used Mobil 1 ATF (non-synthetic) after my tranny rebuild and didn't have any problems with it. I've also tried B&M Trick Shift (didn't get much of a chance to drive on it) and another synthetic ATF which is currently in my tranny (don't remember the name offhand). I don't like the current fluid too much and will go back to either Mobil 1 ATF synthetic/regular blend next time the fluid is out. I've heard a lot of good things about Redline, but for the cost and lack of availability around here (where do you get that stuff) I'd stick with the Mobil 1 for now.

Sorry, my last post should have read "don't use Mobil 1 SYNTHETIC ATF on a fresh rebuild". But that doesn't apply in your case.

There's alot of choices, that's for sure. You'll just have to pick one and hope for the best. Maybe install a drain plug if you want to switch around and experiment. My vote goes to the Synchromesh.

I changed the fluid in both of my cars about 2 months ago and replaced it with GM Syncromesh. It didn't do much at all for my 1993, did wonders for my 1992.
