I'm back on the stock tune already, so I'll swap in the old plugs this weekend while I have time.

So, I just picked the car up from the shop. And it was the pcm. I'm currently running the colder plugs and stock tune. I'll let this 'soak' for a bit and then try to reinstall the 3bar map sensor and gh tune. Maybe this or next weekend. Hopefully, I just ran into some bad luck.

Don't see PCMs going bad too often, but if you flash them too often, they can brick. It is possible the coil drivers just got burnt up, again, don't see much mention of that.

So, I'll provide an update. The new pcm is installed and the car is back to normal. I talked to gearhead and had to order another tune. I'm not happy I had to pay for another one considering I didn't get to use the first one. But it is what it is.
The latest issue is that before I could load the new tune on my sct x4, I tried to update the firmware and it bricked. Now I have to wait until Monday to talk to sct to see if I can fix it. I'm worried its going to cost a bit to fix the tuner and/or I'll get a replacement with a new serial number and need to repurchase another tune. This is getting very expensive for something simple.

If your device is within the warranty period, SCT will fix it for free. Response times may vary though, based on feedback.

Tunes are based on the strategy the PCM is using at the time, i.e., the strategy codes. Sometimes the codes can change but have negligible effect on overall function, but it is always better to match the tune to the code. Not sure why you would have to pay for another tune if it is the same vehicle, maybe the trigger is the new PCM? Not sure.

Did it do this before buying your tuning device, tune, plugs and 3 bar?

What got me is you installed the 3bar, plugs BEFORE loading the tune....did you start it before tuning it? The 3bar will definitely cause a rough idle if not tuned for it. Did you do a KAM(Keep Alive Memory) reset?

If you had no issue before I wouldn't be inclined to believe your PCM is trash? Nothing like throwing money and parts at nothing....I'd be weary of that diagnosis. Can't say that's too common but I'm not expert.

With your old plugs back in...check their gap first they shouldn't be too far over .030. And with the factory 2 bar map, reset KAM on your tuning device, reflash to stock again. See what happens.

Absolutely ^^^ what he said. I'm actually in shock you had to pay for another tune? If I buy a tune....man I'll get at least 4 revisions to it...all part of that one tune purchase. So basically the first tune I get is just to start things off....for example I have methonal. I'll get 2 or 3 tune revisions just to dial in 93 octane....then we start the methonal + 93 tuning in which case it's possible to get 3 more tune revisions...probably why I don't run into weird problems as its all sorted out in the other tune revisions, starting with small tweaks and going from there, each building on each other.

To think you bought a tune, had your issues and without any tune revisions had to buy another one...when I'm sure you let your tuner know the issues you were having...is downright absurd. And I like your tuner....so I'm in disbelief. I would push back a bit on that one....and if it was a one tune fits all deal we all know one tune fits all means it would be an extremely weak tune...to be able to accommodate every car....it would HAVE to have the dial set to LOW.

You shouldn't need to buy a new tuning device either.

So far this sounds like an extremely horrible experience. I hope you walk away with your tune and device running and working properly on your car without buying them twice.

I bought the sct from a guy several months ago who didn't use it (had all 5 unlocks), so I'm guessing it's out of warranty. And the new pcm came with a different strategy, hence the new tune.
So, if I can't get the sct working after talking to support I'm guessing I'll need to send it in to get fixed.

So, I was able to get derive to unbrick the sct x4. It took two separate calls and new firmware, but it finally started working. Other than having to get ahold of them during work hours, they were great to work with.

I was able to install the tune, but haven’t been able to push the car too much. I was expecting more, especially with the trouble I’ve had. But, we won’t really know how it performs until the summer.

sorry to hear you had to pay for another tune because of a dealer reflash. I've heard of tunes bricking the PCM before, and occasionally it does happen with us and requires a reflash of the PCM which changes the strategy, but it's one of the perks of our "package tier" tuning style is that you aren't just buying 2 tunes, you are buying unlimited support for your vehicle with the only upcharging being for certain modifications that require additional effort to dial in.
