minor starting problem

question- my 93 3.2 runs great. I have no check engine light on (the bulb does work). I even ran the paperclip test and have no stored codes. problem is car never starts on first try. on second try, it starts right up. does the same whether car is cold or hot. I thought it might be a weak fuel pump so I turn the key on twice before cranking over to prime the pump, still same thing. it's not a big deal cause the car runs so good. I'm just curious. anyone have/had the same problem?

Nope, mine fire's on first try when ever I try it.

What does yours do when it doesn't start (the first try...)? Does it crank but just doesn't fire? just click when you turn the key? other?

You beat me to the thread... That is EXACTLY what my 95 does. There is one exception, sometimes it won't start on the second attempt, and after that, you have to hold the pedal to the floor to start (it floods)

I have just replaced the plugs (did it prior to plugs too.) The only thing left is the wires, I'm not sure, but they could be OEM from the factory. When I took the old plugs out, they looked great.

I also replaced the ECT sensor.

DITTO on my 93 ATX. Been like that since I have had it...never better, never worse; just occasionally annoying. Same issue when my friend owned the car before me, but with a different motor.

i have the same thing with my 93 MTX it alsways starts when i hold it to the floor, but that surely can't be good for it.

I don't have to touch gas pedal at all. on first try, engine just cranks over with no start. my plugs and wires are new from Ford(18K miles on them). if I had to bet, I'm guessing some type of fuel problem. strange that other guys have same problem.

I have the same problem on my 95 MTX- had a 92 MTX that started great first shot every time, but this one has been consistent since I bought her 3 years ago. Changed plugs, wires, CID sensor, car never stalls, does not run rough, pills hard and sings beautiful music to me above 4000 rpm, but does not start first crank.

I'd love to fix it, and may cave and bring it in to Ford (ouch) to see if they can diagnose it.

Too bad there are no Yamaha dealerships!

I would check your fuel pressures if it doesn't start on the first try... Thats the first place to look in this case. Matter of fact, it was the first thing that came to mind when reading the title to this thread. Cycling the key doesn't seem like a valid fuel pressure test to me. Most auto parts stores rent Fuel Pressure gauges


Spark shouldn't matter in this instance, unless there is a loose ground that gets a better connection from the cranking of the engine. It just doesn't sound like a spark issue, especially if you see no other symptoms, and you have no codes.



EDIT: When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? They're less than $10, and easy to change, might be worth a try.
