To start off i live in Massachusetts and the inspections up here are brutal. So one day my car was acting weird and came to find out it was clogged cats . So i broke out the stuff inside and found that alot of it was melted. What could cause this? I need to know cause im contemplating on whether buying an aftermarket y pipe wih high flow cats or jus goin to the junk yard and pickin one up to pass inspection.

melted cats are a cause of fuel igniting inside them, you best bet to find the cause of the problem is finding out if you are running rich.

I would replace the thermostat and the temp sending unit for the EEC-IV. Those are most likely cause of your engine running rich.

yea i replaced both of those sensors after i gutted out the cats and i have an a/f ratio gauge installed and it is always at stoich. My main concern was buying the y pipe with cats and the same thing happen to the new ones.
