mechanics stethoscope?

I just bought one because I have this rythmatic sound coming from my engine bay. Well I checked the front valve cover and everywhere sounds the same.I also checked the fuel rail and everything sounds good. It is not a low end tick, but I checked the oil pan too though. Rear valve cover was hard to get to though. What else should I check with it? Any tips or tricks? thanks guys

You may as well check everything that you can access. Like the idler pulleys the alt and so on.
