Yep clutch needs done now. He must have had a bad relationship with some other taurus tranny. I'm trying to convince him to tackle my 89 mtx clutch. He has two bays and lifts. I ordered the DVD. I have the shop manuals. He has changed the engine out of my 93 Bonneville by dropping it and the tranny out the bottom. No problem. What do I need to do to put his mind at ease? Is it that bad of a job? Will the DVD show him it is no big deal or scare him off? At $20/hour straight time I will rent any tool or give him what ever he needs to get this done......except sex.

haha my mechanic did my clutch one, said to NEVER bring the car back again. I just needed my tranny changed, so i asked him and he said he was serious to take it somewhere else lol. find some unsuspecting mechanic to do it lol. If it was summer time id say do it yourself but its no fun in the cold.

I don't see how it could be any HARDER than an ATX in a SLO, and I've done my share of those...they're not bad at all, if you have an engine hanger, that rests on the ledge the fenders bolt to, and hangs the engine right there. It's best to have two people to remove & replace the subframe, and to slide the tranny back in. Other than that, not as bad as doing the oil pan on a Northstar Caddi(Oh lord, do not ask me for a list).

As I said in another thread(maybe by the same author), IMO, it should be much easier than an ATX, because those things are HEAVY and bulky, an MTX should not be nearly so.

If you want to bring the car to Florida, I'd be happy to do it for you

i dont understand why theyre refusing... its not that complicated... is it perhaps that if they find anything else wrong they are arfraid to try and find parts... **** if i can do it in my garage (18 Y/O kid) and have it fire up right away, with no problems (that were my fault atleast) i dont see how someone doing this for a living couldnt do it...

the ATX sho tranny's are easier then the MTX Focus transmissions, i know that for a fact

i cant see the MTX sho tranny's being that much of a problem, especialy if you have acess to a lift, i mean c'mon ... all you have tyo do is pull the front suspension, drop the subframe and drop the tranny,

dropping the sufbrame isnt realy a big deal, especialy if you have some saw horses of steel drums to set the car down on while u run the bolts out

alex and i have had the turbo sho's atx out twice so far

once to go from stock to FPS, once to repair the TQ converter when it came loose

both times it was done on jackstands, and the second time it was done during the huge buffalo snowstorm in october

The MTX is IMO very easy. I have done them a dozen of times and that is on my garage floor with no lift. But if this guy is unsure of the job do your SHO a favor and do it yourself or find someone else. No need to have a screw up that could have been avoided. My .02.

SHo clutches are the worst to replace of any car I have owned by far; I have done many others on my old RWD cars by myself in a couple of hours total, (only requiring driveshaft, starter removal to drop the trans), and will happily pay the local shop $500 for the labor; they will also guarantee the work so if something goes South after the install, no worries about having to do it all over.

SHO clutch is easy.

It's the crusty ass exhaust manifold studs that will suck the big one.

Find out exactly what the mechanic is worried about and address the specific problems one at a time.
