kinda a dumb question, but I've done searches without any answers...

I personally hate manifold heat shields as they're a common source of rattles and cuts...at least on the other cars I've worked on. I'm planning on having my manifolds coated in that chromish looking ceramic coating, I shouldn't need those heat shields anymore right? They advertise that it's suppose to lower underhood temps is there any truth to that? Also, is the chromish coating gonna be good enough, or should I opt for the black or blueish coating that's higher temp rated instead?

I've also been considering making some headers for the 3.4L as I'm planning on using a 3.4L in a rwd application, any tips on metals, thickness and coatings for them?

Cant speak for the V8 , but back in the day , I did remove mine on my V6. No issues , but make sure nothing is close.

For headers , its either SS or mild steel I think gauge 14-16 is good enough. If you want to save a couple bucks , you can always use powdercoat (hi-temp) from eastwood. Prevents rust , and they are still like new on mine. Specially if you already have the powdercoating setup - you will save alot of money. Heres before and after.

I had the Jet Hot coating on my exhaust manifolds and also used the heat shields. Get the heat shields coated too. Never heard any rattles form them as long as they aren't eroded around the bolt holes.
