Driving home from town when the engine started making a very loud tapping noise that got louder as the rpm's rose. It didn't have any power and i had trouble just keeping it running. Whenever i would shift the engine would shut off and as i reingaged the clutch it would pop start its self and run. I got home and everything was to hot to touch and there was some smoke comming from the engine compartent. Im pretty sure the enine is toast im just wondering what you guys think went wrong?

What year and mileage? It sounds like a spun bearing but it is hard to diagnose without hearing. Did the oil light flicker?

Oh no, sounds like you're joining the spun bearing club :frown:
As Chuck said, did the oil light come on or even flicker?

Its a 93 with 132k. And i have black tape over the anit-lock brake light, and the oil light is next to it so i didn't see if it flickered.

What causes these rod bearing problems? The reason I ask is I have a slight knocking sound when the motor is really cold (below freezing) - it is a very subtle and goes away in a few blocks, but might be a concern. I just did the full 60k...(although a recent upper tick.. tick...tick likely means I have to recheck my valve shims - backside of couse)

95 ATX, 84k...

Any 100,000mi SHO engine is likely to have worn rodbearings. Especially if its been
used hard. Bearing wear is more relative to RPM than mileage. A knocking at start-up is more likely a piston if it goes away after warming.
