ok here's my story, i did a search and still no luck, trying to pass emissions, i pluged my canister purgg, i will be taking the air filter out for the test, but i cleaned my maf with brake cleaner, that stuff that stinks like pure alchol, is that ok to have done? i started the car up and runs fine. thanks guys in advance, i have a apointment for tommorow at 4 pm, as i also bough this pass garuantee stuff as well, says to put 250 klm on before doing a test, so i have to go to toronto tommorow anyhow. anyways just wondering if using the brake kleen was ok, it's a little late now but just wondering if it will hurt my emissions. or help.

You might have got lucky and used the non-chlorinated brake cleaner. I think you might be ok if you were careful when cleaning.

aw crap, i will have to take a look and see what kinda brake cleaner i used, it's manufactured by 3M, i don't know if it was chlorine free or not, i will have to look. i just sprayed it into the maf opening. i couldn't find a thread on how to exactly clean it. i even looked in the how to section.... just not my day i guess.

What's the deal with not using the non-chlorinated stuff? It leaves no residue.

I was told by Doug at Performance Plus, that you can use brake cleaner. You have to spray it onto a q-tip and very gentley clean the 2 sensors, making sure there is not q-tip fibers left on either of the two sensors.

Whe I get home tonight, I'll clean my MAF and take pics and do a write up...

Seems like lots of people don't know how to perform this properly.

I've used MAF cleaner, electronics cleaner, brake cleaner, and TB cleaner. It all worked out the same.

Yeah, I'm not really buying the MAF cleaner only. The only way it can destroy the hot wire is if it actually strips the coating off of it. If the MAF is unplugged I would be surprised if it did that.

I will never again touch the MAF wires with ANY solid object. I got a single fiber of something I was cleaning one with and it wrapped around one of the wires and bent it.

As by way of comparison, the cold wire MAF on my Impala looks much more robust.

that would be great, see if we can get it stickied to the How To section. i will be looking for it tonight as i don't think i cleaned mine at all. i just sprayed the brake cleaner inside the MAF housing, i didn't wipe any wires or anything.

I really don't think this is as difficult as people are making it out to be. I would just disconnect the MAF from the wiring harness, remove the two screws from the MAF and carefully remove it from the housing. Spray the elements down with a residue-free electronics cleaner (just in case brake cleaner is too harsh, which I cannot be sure of). Do not touch it with anything, there is no need. Reassemble it and you are good to go.

That' harder than it should be too...

Hold up MAF, spray wires down, let dry, and replace MAF>
