Long story short, work didn't pay me for 3 weeks. now my rotors are bad and need to chang ethe caliper and pads and the whole shabang. Now my rear caliper is leaking and I still have to drive to work. The thing is my key for the lugnut and the lugnut itself is stripped got the other 4 lugnuts off but this one with the key I have tried everything but take it to a shop. I tried hammering a socket over it. Can someoen please tell me how to get this lugnut off so I can change this caliper. HELP!!!!!

Try using a pair of visegrips. Get a REALLY tight grip on it, and then strike the visegrip pliers with a hammer.

I had to use a socket just smaller than the nuts, beat the heck out of it to get it on, and use a ratchet to unthread it. Remove nut from socket and move on to the next one. Mine were too tight for the vise grips to work.

they make special hardened tapered sockets for just this situation, we use these at work to get locking nuts off, it is just a hardened socket that you pound on really hard then turn it like a nomal socket.

you really have to pound the FU** out of special socket to get it to grip.

As mentioned, there is a special tool available for this purpose. I recently saw them hanging up at Sears, about $20 IIRC.

Alternatively (and this is how we do it), take a 12-point 21mm socket (make sure it's a Craftsman with its handy-dandy lifetime warranty!), pound it on with a hammer, and spin off the offending nut. IMPORTANT TIP: It helps to tighten the lugnuts on the lugs on both sides of the one you're trying to remove as tight as you can before trying to remove the nut.

Last resort, most wheel/tire shops will probably do it for around $20.

Are the locks original factory jobbies? If so, does anyone know if there was more than one configuration or are they all the same?

Depending on how quickly you need to remove these locks, I could lend you my key - if you think it would fit.

Let me know if you need it, and I'll hobble out to the garage tomorrow!

Good luck :thumb:

*EDIT* woops, sorry I just saw that it's a stripped nut you're having trouble with.

When I removed all the lockers from my parts car I TIG welded 1/2" nuts on all them. Although not many people have a TIG handy.

OH you didn't know
If you can, take it to a Discount Tire location, we can usually remove any wheel locks except some Volkswagen locks. Depending how difficult to remove, they may not charge you at all.
