Need some to paint this awesome Coverlay dash cap I found at the j/y on an 89. I was able to gently pry it off undamaged.

Any idea where I can get an exact match paint and how I should prep/paint this thing? It just glues on over your existing dash. They retail on Coverlay for $145...picked it up for $20, so I can avoid a dash swap now even though I need a BDA.

It's hard to go from a darker color to a lighter one. And you want a dye, not a paint. I would just install it as is. I'm not very familiar with the 89 dash, but I think it would look ok.

what he has is a overlay for the dash , if i can remember correctly....it made from abs and is molded in black so the vinyl paint will work its like painting a door panel

Yep, that's exactly what it is, made from ABS plastic.

I would look into stripping it first. Even if all the black still left it imperfect, I would suspect it would still be easier to color-match the original gray at that point.

Dark Titanium Interior:

And my suggestion is, "don't bother." Leave it black.

I installed the exact same thing in mine several years ago. FYI it's dark titanium you want and SEM makes a color called Sequoia that closely matches it. The part number is 15673. The best part about SEM is that it's made for interiors and the paint has held up great on mine.

Use silicone to glue the cap down and put some weight on the top of the dash to hold it in place until it dries. Other than that, pat yourself on the back. It was a great find and will do wonders for your interior.

If you want, I have both the Sequoia and the Ford Dark Titanium on hand and would be happy to spray both down on a sheet of paper and post a pic for you to compare.

That would be awesome if you could post pics of the color differences. Thanks! SEM has a Lt. Titanium part # 15353. I wonder if that's the exact match? I'm going to try that color and order a color card as well. The part # you mentioned is not on the current color chart on TCP Global's site.

Did you prep it or just spray it on?

SEM on the left and Dark Titanium on the right. The SEM spray can ran out of propellent and that's why the splatter but as you can see, they are a close if not perfect match.

Definitely degrease it and take a fine scuff pad to it before painting.

What it looks like installed:

You can get SEM vinyl dye custom mixed at an automotive paint store.

I ordered the SEM Lt.Titanium, but if I'm not happy with the color match, I'll take a piece of extra trim I have and get them to mix something up for me.

Dark Titanium has a slight brownish tint to it. Light Titanium doesn't.

Have you looked at any retailers online that carry SEM? I'm sure someone out there has a can or two of Sequoia in stock.
