Laurence's (dfwsho) SHO had been dropped off at my place this weekend so that I could try to identify the electrical gremlins that were interfering with his dash lights, climate control lights and turn signals. I have restored the dash lights, but the turn signals and climate control display will cease to function when the fuse pops.

The fuse blows when the shifter is notched into reverse gear. I checked the continuity of the backup lamp sockets and found them to be shorted to ground on both terminals with, or without, the shifter in reverse. I have checked the electrical schematics and I am now looking for the backup lamp switch to test its electrical function. Does anybody know where the backup lamp switch is located on the '94 MTX?

Top of the case tends to collect dirt and crap. Make sure you clean off around the switch before you unhook it. When you un-thread it, you'll be exposing in the inside of the tranny so don't let any dirt fall in there. There is no filtering system in there, so once it's in...

Thanks for the feedback. I don't intend to remove the switch, just test the connections to determine if either is shorted to ground.

Just to provide the result of the work on Laurence's car, the switch was functioning properly, but the wiring harness that was connected to it was shorted to ground on the support bracket above the transmission housing. Repair of the wires and the addition of more plastic sheathing around the harness got everything back to normal.

Scott, you are THE MAN when it comes to knowing the SHO inside & out! I sure wish it wasn't a 20 hr. drive to Richardson, TX because I'd be setting up a 60K & Clutch replacement with you!

I was scheduled to fly up to Columbus, OH on September 14 for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversay, but the flight and trip were canceled by the events on the 11th. I have a cousin who lives in Dublin, OH with her family. Maybe I could visit my cousin and a few SHOs....

Now that I am temporarily unemployed, I may be talked into a driving tour of the Northeast. I would have to drive to be able to pack the trunkful of tools that is required to perform the 60K services.

Scott, would love to have you visit Columbus, Ohio & do 60K maintenance on my son's '91 SHO & my '91 SHO PLUS. If you get a chance, please e-mail me direct regarding your labor charges to do the 60K, and also to do a clutch replacement!

I originally suggested the rolling SHO maintenance tour in jest, but I will have to consider the possibility of making this a reality for the income potential in my unemployed condition. Who else in the Ohio area would be interested in the valve gapping or timing belt change services?

Well you already got me, and I think Steve (94ShoOff) said his other two needed it, but I can't speak for him. We live about 10 minutes apart in the same suburb 30mins East of Cleveland. Feel free to shoot me an email if you need some more info or would just like to continue this off the forum.

Well, i'm probably at least 5 hours away in Buffalo, NY, but depending on the rate to do the valve gapping/adjusting and if you could fix the knock i currently have on and off, I would DEFINITELY make the trip...

Scott, don't forget the one who got this whole traveling SHOTOUR of Ohio started! Let me know, when you get a chance, what the cost would be for the 60K & clutch replacement labor(parts would be extra, of course). My SHO PLUS needs both, and my son's '91(which used to be my daily driver, until he stuck me with the '91 Saturn, ouch!) needs at least the 60K and the clutch has some throwout bearing rattle but still works pretty good! Since I'm an old man @ 48, I didn't know about the "props" slang either, but it must be good if used in your direction. Heck, bring your wife & child along, my wife wants to be a Grandma so bad she would probably want to adopt your child!

Well, I had been charging $750 ($375 each for the upper end and front end work) labor for the complete 60K when I performed the services in my garage, but I think I would have to add a bit to cover the cost of house calls to Ohio. It sure sounds like there would be more than enough jobs to do when I get there.

The tools I was referring to would leave out the heavier and larger items. I have packed up all of the gear for the complete 60K for a service in Fort Worth (about an hour away) so I know it will fit in the trunk. I'm exploring the travel possibilities with my wife to see if she will accomodate my absence for the extended period.

I have previously scheduled a day each for the upper end work (valve gaps, plugs, plug wires, valve cover and plug well seals, intake and valve cover cleaning, IAB cleaning) and the front end work (timing belt, accessory belt(s), water pump, CPS, front main seal). I could do the jobs faster, but I couldn't do them as well.

Considering the possibilities,
Scott

Scott, the previous owner replaced the water pump, did the timing belt, etc. so I don't think I will need those. He didn't do the front main seal, though, but I think I can let that go. I would like some UDPs installed, however. Would I still pay the $750 or would there be some sort of price adjustment since I wouldn't need some of the PITA like a timing belt and waterpump. Feel free to email me off list if you'd rather do that.

Another quick question...do you have a rough estimate of how much the actual PARTS that WE need cost (complete 60k)? I can't believe how fast this can add up...
