When I first got the tuner I immediately ran to my SHO to go plug it in. I knew there were no tunes on it but I wanted to play with it anyways, as a techie I always end up breaking everything tech related, so I was on my way to go play with the tuner. After plugging it in and going through every menu I figured out there isn't much it does other than installing tunes. After I got the tunes from my email it was a pretty painless process getting them on the scanner. Getting them into the car was rather easy as well, this was the step I was most worried about. The initial tuning takes about 20 minutes to a half hour. After that, it only takes 5 minutes to flash between tunes.

My first ride in the tuned SHO was no less than awesome. The first start took a little longer than normal, but I noticed it always does that after replacing the file. I added the Stage 2 with reduced torque management as the first tune. Its what I'm running now as well. Pulling around the corner I can already feel the difference in the shift points and throttle response. Throttle responds near instantly instead of previously where the throttle responded similar to Obama taking his sweet ass time answering questions on the economy. The shifts are much firmer even with just the Stage 2. When the car goes you shift you feel the tip in, shift, and then smooth out very quickly. Its almost like the F1 shifting of a Ferrari but not as severe.

Getting on the throttle is much more exhilarating then ever before. Whether you are starting from a stop or doing 65 on the highway looking to pass someone there is power everywhere. From a stop, the tires break loose a bit, turbos spool up and you are gone. On the highway you will find yourself shooting for alot smaller gaps then you ever have before. Kickdown is near instant with the tune and it allows you to move much quicker. Before the tune I would have to kick down about 2 seconds before I would move over to ensure I had the power I needed to pass people. Now not only do I not have to use as much throttle but I do not have to wait for downshifts. The one part I cant stand about highway drivers is when you go to pass someone they speed up. Seriously, what are these people thinking? All I think is to push down a bit more and drop 1 more gear to show them what the letters SHO truly mean. I also feel the need to randomly push down on the throttle when the road is open just to hear the woosh of the turbos which has become much more evident after the tune.

I was rather hesitant about tuning my car for warranty issues but after doing it I would say its well worth the risk. The car doesn't feel any more fragile after tuning it. I actually used to get some glitches in the transmission where it would shift kind of clunky going gear to gear and from drive to reverse but those all seem to be gone as of now after the tune as well. It shifts much stronger then it ever has, and I honestly cant see going back to stock without at least keeping the transmission tune. The increase in the redline also adds to the excitement when going full throttle.

Add this with my new Borla exhaust and I feel like I have created somewhat of the perfect daily driver. Swift, docile, tamed, yet an animal when need be. The Borla has a nice down low grunt and rumble like a Subie STI, somewhat like a v8, and has a nice growl as you increase the revs. Hopefully I find someone with a decent video camera soon to make a good video for everyone to hear. It sounds completely different than the Corsa. I would say its rather loud for just a cat back exhaust too.

Hope this helps some of you guys on the fence. Feel free to ask any questions.

Hopefully this

Rick are you saying that in your opinion the stage4 is not as safe as the other stages or do you need more trial time with stage4?

Personally, I don't know tuning.. when we developed the tune, our tuner Dan said he would recommend a mix of race gas and pump gas. As Darrell said, he has been running this tune on 93 octane pump gas without issue as have quite a few others. Since Dan says he would run higher octane, I just caution everyone in advance, but I've never heard of anyone that has had any issues caused by any of our tunes.

Great write-up way2evil! Thank you for the hands-on review. I plan on getting this tune after the holiday spending comes to a stop....I have spoken with Rick and after hearing everyone's rave reviews, I can't wait to get this tune. Like you, I've been hesitant with regards to possible warranty issues however after hearing everyone's experiences, I can't hold off any longer!

Rick, expect a call or email from me VERY soon..... :dribble:

I just put the stage 2 in and it seems whenever I need to downshift two gears I get a huge bang from my transmission. Anyone know what the problem is?

Sounds like it may be caused by a defective transmission range sensor . . . There is a TSB out and, as mentioned, a detailed thread in the other forum discussing the issue.

So is the Borla loud all the time with droning or is it loud only when you get on it?

On the borla how much was it?

And yes we all love our tuned SHO's it's the way the car should have been and man does it really shock people when you lay the smack down on them in a 4 door family car. Nobody expects that kind of performance from a Taurus and 12's is nothing to sneeze at. Not many productions cars run this times stock that cost less the $45k

I am now chomping at the bit to get a tune, but Christmas gift buying has now put my plans on hold for a few weeks. I bought my wife some stuff she really wanted but ended up spending more then I had planned...but since she allowed me to get the SHO back in August, I figured I had to return the favor...but getting a Livernois tune is high on my priorities after the holidays!

I know the feeling with Christmas spending....
I too will order the tune sometime soon after Christmas, but have a couple questions:

1/ I understand that the tuner comes separately from the programs and that they have to be loaded into the programmer by the purchaser from data on an email?

2/ Are these programs tailored to each car's mods or a general tune to accommodate most mods.

3/ Are the programs stealth and non detectable by techs at the dealership who will service the car, or would the OEM program be reloaded for service then changed out again after?

Thanks guys, Lookin' forward to my new SHO in a few weeks. Also have the AirAid intake on order too.

SG-

1. They'll mail you the tuner, then you give them the ECM code and they'll email you the tune or tunes.

2. The mods are pretty limited right now. I can only speak of Livernois tunes, their tunes are based on a couple cars that really have every mod available. I'm not sure how far Cambridge is into Ontario but Livernois is about 20 min from the bridge if you wanted it dyno tuned.

3. The programs are definately not stealth. You'd have to flash it back to stock. On a side note the dealer can still track how many times the cars been flashed.

Thanks for the quick reply, Darreli, cheers......

That explains a few things.......so the ECM code has to be retrieved first. How's is that done?

So Livernois is in Michigan not far from the bridge? I'm about 3 hours from the bridge this side (near Toronto). Not too far to go if need be.

Interesting info on the flashes and being detectable by the dealer. I suppose if there's no issues, he won't say much.

Lookin' forward to the new SHO. Haven't had a Ford since mid nineties GT, now we'll have a new SHO and the wife's new Fiesta hatch.

Cheers,
C.

My question too..how do you get the code, and where is the port to plug in the tuner. I've been lazy and haven't looked to find the port. Also, I'm not sure where the ECM is located in the car either. I know where they're located in the Ford trucks, but since I haven't owned a Ford car since '79, not sure where they're putting stuff these days. (Well, at least a car that I wanted to mod or tune...the Sable and my old Taurus don't count since they were "beater"mobiles!)

The plugin for the ECM is directly under the steering wheel at bottom of dash. Has a cover on it. Follow the wires.

As you say, we'll probably have to locate the ECM for that number..
Anyone?

Yeah..sorry. Plug the tuner in the OBD port below the steering wheel under the dash. On the tuner you'll have the option to read the strategy (code). Should be DMJK and then a 1 thru I think 4 is the most current strategy. You give them that strategy and they'll email you the tune

Everything you need in order to have the tune built can be found on the tuner when you plug it into your car.

Placing my order for the tuner Friday. I wonder what the turn around time is

We will be closed Friday and I will be out until after the new year. There will be some guys here, but the holidays will definitely slow the process. Normal turnaround time once we receive the email with the strategy code, serial number, list of mods, and what fuel you run is typically same day.

Thank you,

Rick

Just want to add that my tires break loose on the highway at 20 mph to full throttle. With only the stage 2. I love this car.
