Greetings All,

2016 stock non-PP, 50K miles

I had a sudden onset rattle, sounds like nuts in a can - front driver wheel area. Wasn't there when I drove to work, was there when I drove home. Pulled the tire, looked at all of the bits, everything looked OK. Took it to Ford and was relieved of $135 for them to tell me that it was my brake pad clips. OK... Always willing to learn something new. Put PowerStop and new pads on about 5K ago, they've been great, but maybe I missed something.

I put new clips in, replaced the bolt boots and re-lubed the pins (all parts were still in good working order since recently installed). Everything moves well. The pads have off side springs that are tight against the caliper holder. Put it all back together and still have the rattle. It's mostly noticeable below 20MPH - may be there over that speed and road noise hides it. Can also hear it when breaking, so makes the pad clip suggestion further suspect. The only thing I am not sure of is the small circular rubber grommet/tube that comes with the brake pad parts. I've seen a post where it is mentioned, but I can't find it again (always the way), so I'm not sure where those pieces go.

My first thought was wheel bearing, but I don't have the vibration or hum that I have had in the past with bearing failure/degradation. It's also a frequent noise, but not continuous, and sometimes it's an obvious rattle, sometimes a less obvious rattle. Sometimes not there at all. It seems very much a front/driver wheel area noise, but I guess I'll take the back wheel off tomorrow and see.

I think the dealer saw non-OEM parts and stopped looking for the problem. The fact that they said it was clips, and their solution was to replace the pads, not the clips, tells me this dealer is not industry leading technicians/customer service oriented. ****, I would have replaced the clips as a good will (and value for the $135 diagnosis fee) gesture.

Anyway, any ideas? Is there a good way to test the wheel bearing? Where does that little rubber dealy in the pad kit go?

Appreciate your time and insight!

Just an idea...

Are your brake (heat) shields still installed? They are famous for trapping a small rock and causing random rattles and screeching as the rock gets slung around between the shield and the rotor.

Hopefully your dealer checked in there.

Good Luck!

Wheel bearing is typically tested with wheel turned left or right while driving. Noise while turned left is right wb, and vice versa.

Are you using oem clips/parts to secure the pads and calipers?
  1. Caliper guide pins or guide pin bolts
  2. Missing or damaged antirattle clips or springs
  3. Loose brake disc shield
Another source of rattle can be the flywheel if it is cracked/damaged. This has happened with the 2.0 EB engine in the Edge:

albeit typically at idle.

The clips were part of the pads when I used OEM superduty pads last time. I have 2013 brakes. The clips were non existent on the aftermarket pads I have used previously.

When my left front bearing/hub went bad it started with light scraping and squeaking. It would likely be really bad if it sounded like you describe.

I haven't had time to get back in and look around more. Should be able to this weekend. The pads that came with the power stop kit have the pad mounted springs and they seem to be doing their job correctly.

The pins are the OEM part and still had plenty of grease on them when I pulled them, regreased them anyway and put them back in. Replaced the caliper slides and pin boots, reseated pads, noise remains exactly the same. I did check the dust shield and its clearing the rotor all the way around, plus noise is somewhat intermittent so it's not a constant rub. I'll check the shield this weekend and make sure there's not foreign objects stuck in there. Given how quickly it came on, it wouldn't surprise me if it were something 'floating' in there.

I did a few lock wheel turns in both directions and didn't hear or feel anything out of the ordinary. It's really odd.

Appreciate the thoughts and suggestions!

Do you only hear it when going over bumps, or is it any time the vehicle is moving? If only over bumps I'd be inclined to really study the anti-sway bar end links, especially since the noise doesn't change when applying the brakes. If the vehicle just has to be moving to hear it, and the check of the heat shield doesn't identify an issue there, you may want to review TSB 14-0186 related to a pop/click/tick noise from the front half shaft.

Checked around the wheel again, then last Monday, transmission kept wanting to stay in a higher gear, would upshift with paddle car would downshift. Then got the stink of burning fluid. So bad, filled house with car just in driveway. So maybe problem is in PTU. Back to dealer. If it is, warranty item, so that's nice.

That said, time doesn't always correlate to cause, so may have a rattle and PTU issue. We'll see.

Thanks, Rod. Looked at the TSB, definately more of a rattle than a click or pop. Waiting to see what the PTU shows.

Dealer called today. PTU sh*t the bed while the tech was driving it around the lot. New PTU on order, should have it back by end of week. Covered under the factory drive train. Glad it failed while covered.

Yay for warranty! Hopefully the rattle will go away, but some EB engines on other model lines have had rattles in the flexplate area due to poor bolt/threadlocker application. I would have them check it out.

From a 2015 Edge 2.0EB owner
"Motor noise at idle. It sounds like hydraulic lifter. Goes away under load or when RPMs increase in neutral. 300 miles to home. Oil was and is fine. No lights or codes."
A pic he provided
