Denny... when do you plan on going. It's a pretty long drive from Toledo but if I can get instructions I would be interested. I just got home from work but call me anytime in the morning... 419-380-2418.

Seemed like a good day for the track, nice & cold, with a crosswind (from the SW).

Anybody go? I had to attend to selling the SHO today.

Yeah what the ****!!! The website says that it would be open so I drive 2 1/2 hours to go and kick Denny's ace. I get to the track and the gates are closed and nobody is there. I was like WTF!? the drive home was 3 hours thanks to 75's south bound construction. That was about a waste of a day. I guess I was never meant to run there. The last time I was gonna run there I blew a diff pin the day before. Ridiculous! :madflame:

Yeah sorry about that Jim. When I got there, some guy that had been waiting had just left. I got out and talked to the few waiting. They said they had been there an hour. Within a few minutes, the guy said it was "going to be chucked" I waited around for about half an hour in case you were showing up. Called your place, but didn't get ahold of anyone. I drove slow on the way back out to town looking for you, but no avail. All the time I was thinking "oh crap Jim is going to waste a day :jpshakeh: "
Maybe I wasn't meant to run there too, I keep having the nasty thought "something will break if I drive out somewhere to race" oh well. So much for my anticipated 14 without a Quaife run.
And so much to ever going back to Lapeer, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

I agree it's too far away to just run up there and maybe they will decide to be open and maybe they decide to be closed. I feel that if you say you will be open (as the website did) that you damn well better be open. Especially if you have people coming from out of area.

No kidding. The guy was like "we'll try again tomorrow, call around noon to see if we're running or not, if not we'll see you in the spring." Umm nope sorry, I'd rather do GTech runs right in front of my local PD station before going back there. :squint:

Yeah they did the same thing to me a couple saturday's ago. At least it was only a 45 minute drive.

The guy said that there was puddles on the track (it hadnt rained since late the previous evening), and that it was too cold for them to get it dry. maybe if they had an actual piece of equipment and not a damn van dragging a tire on the track to dry it off, they woudl attract enough people. :bonk:

I have a rain pass that the guy said would still be good for the 05 season. Anyone wanna buy it? :snicker:

Hang on to the rain checks. I know a bunch of people have them, and when we head back out there in May, there will most likely be buyers that they can be sold to.

Yeah, Lapeer is a small, family-run operation, so they aren't quite as "professional" as bigger tracks, and since they are only open on weekends, they don't get enough revenue to buy stuff like track driers. Just look at a typical Saturday (dunno about Sunday, I've never been there on a Sunday). Fifty cars would be a VERY good turnout (and I've been there many times with only half that many), and at $25 per racing car, that's only $1,250 in gross revenue. I'm sure that there are better turnouts on Sunday for the money races with higher track fees, but still, they aren't rakin' in the dough. When you look at the expenses for a even a track like that (taxes, insurance, wages, etc), Saturdays probably make very little, if any, profit.

We will continue to set up our Spring & Fall meets there. They are largely social events, anyway, and everyone is just out for some time trials. Lapeer is vey user-friendly in that regard (as opposed to other local tracks).

I understand that the guy has insurance, taxes and such to pay, but those are fixed costs. The municipality doesn't say "oh you were only open 75% of the time, so your tax bill is 75% of the stated amount." Sure Saturday's turnout wasn't so hot, but he could have brought in a few bucks to go towards those fixed expenses, not to mention insure future trips to his strip. And likw Jim mentioned, on his website, it said they'd be open until Sunday. Actually, if you had read their site anytime until last Tuesday, it said they were going to be open until this upcoming weekend. When I saw that, I was checking the weather forecast everytime I checked my email, praying for decent weather because I wanted one last run with a stock intake and pre-Quaife(Beth you listening? :thumb: )
In my case, he's had my $25, and Jason's, and Beth's and so on for over a month. He made $100s very easily that day when we all went there and now has our cash to do with as he pleases. I could have spent that $25 on my service business in the last month and earned a decent return easily.
Oh well, if I ever become a millionaire, I'm building my own track, SHOForum friends get free admission.

BUT....employee salaries, power, etc. are variable costs. Sure, taxes are fixed, but I'll bet that he has a variable insurance policy with one rate for 365 days of basic coverage, and there is a variable, additional liability portion for days that he's open.

IMHO, opening a dragstrip in today's climate would have to be one of the poorer business decisions. Any new ones that I have seen open are tied to a road course, or some other business venture.

Yes, their website is not kept current, nor has their phone voice message been current, either. To me, those could be fixed easily to tell folks that a final decision on the track opening would be made by say Noon of race day.

That track ain't makin' money. The "hundreds" that you speak of are chicken-feed for that type of operation. From all indications, it is a weekend hobby business, as no one could make a living from it.......much like being a SHO-only vendor!!

Ron I'm gonna jump into this thread even after I promised myself I would never post anything about Lapeer again.

1. I paid my admission for the October event I got rain checks that I was told are good till the end of this year.
2. 25 bucks???? **** if I was worried about 25 bucks I'd sell the SHO quit smoking and drinking
3. Well I've been rained out of Stanton. Milan, Norwalk,IRP, Cecil County etc and I've never really complained and that was back when I was racing a Pro Comp car so the fee's were a little higher then Lapeer. **** to Buy back would get me 4-6 cars into Lapeer.
4. It is the TRACK OWNERS DISCRETION to open or close the track. Look at October they tried harder then **** to get us out there before they called it. And I'm sure if they would have let you race and and you totaled the car and yourself you would be the first in line to sue Lapeer Dragway.
5. Is anyone else ********?? I'm 20 minutes from Lapeer and my rain check is over the visor of my car I never even thought about it again.
6. Nobody holds a gun to anyone's head and say you must race Lapeer. A few people have wanted to put a gun to thier head after racing at Lapeer but that's another story.
7. Rant Mode off until I get over to the ugly supercharger thread.
