if your lucky you might get away with a set of rod bearings, but if a bearing has spun, the crank could be damaged. there are alot more people on here that have gone through this, they will chime in and point you in the right direction. either way good luck, hopefully it's not bad.

cool this is a start.......is there anything i can go check on the car right now and post back to help diagnose this knock........im getting a loss of power......still starts and drives aside from the knock its idling smooth and sounds great still.......just a big knock.......local mechs are saying new engine but im familiar with the game and know theres other ways around this.....im thinking that its rod knock......This is my second venture into my favorite car ever....i had a 91+ black on black few years back and loved it......now this gen 2 is giving me a headache but whatever it takes i will fix it....i dont care money is a concern but whatever.......diagnosis is my first step these mechs around here want to rip into the engine to determine the problem further than just swapping the motor, i'd rather get insight from the veterans on here...........knock knock

First off, quit driving it around. You need to tow it from now on.

I have changed out rod bearings on two cars that were knocking. One lived, the other knocked again. The general rule is that if it is knocking, it is all over. However, for the 60 you will spend in bearings, it is worth a look.

At least pull the oil pan down and look at the crank. There is not much else to talk about until you do that.

knockin

i also had what i thought was a rod knock turned out to be the timing belt slapping the cover(my tensioner went).i also removed the acc. belt to make sure it wasn' t one of the other accesories. you can remove the upper timing cover and see if the belt is sloppy it should remain tight.also if the knock goes away when you rev it to a certain rpm that may be the culprit. is the car a mtx or auto?

Yeah, +1 on the DON'T DRIVE IT ANY MORE! if it is a spun rod bearing, and it more than likely is, the engine is 80% guaranteed to be toast, especially based on how much you've driven it already. The red oil light coming on is a dead giveaway. That plus knocking means rod bearings, every time.

Change them, and hope to God you didn't score the crank. Unless you get it reground (expensive) and put undersize bearings in it, you're looking at a brand new (used) engine! Which is often just as expensive as getting a reground crank... just sayin'...

I'm going to check mine when I have the pan off. Is there one cylinder that tends to show the most wear and can be checked as an indicator of what to expect on the others?

I strongly suggest that you still change the rod bearings while you have the motor out. Much easier at that point.

by the time you hear them knocking or the oil light is on steadily at idle, its wayyyyy too late. so whats the point of checking them, and if one spun, the rod will not hold a new bearing anyways.
