hey guys, i'm new to this forum and I just bought a 96' black sho about ohhh 3 1/2 weeks ago and i'm lovin' it. I'm just about to get my car checked at a dealer for basicly everything just to know what needs to be replaced and what not (I normaly wouldn't bother but i'm not the one payin' the service bill). and yes it has been welded
I was just wondering if anyone here had been having problems with the K&N cone filter as far as hot weather/heat would go. I go to school down in Indiana and a lot of my buddies have these on their cars and say that if there is a hot stretch of weather that this thing actually hurts their performance? I just thought i'd toss this up to all the people here that know infinately more about the sho then I do at this point. Thanks for any help

I agree. The cone under the hood causes engine performance to suffer in warmer weather. Some form or porterization, that is taking air directly from the gap between the inner and outer wheel well, is the way to go.

Yep. Go for porterized.

I have had both, and porterized works better in hot weather.
Did you ever test this theory at the track?

I let my brother have my K&N cone, so I can't test them one after the other. I have compared in a sort of bench racing fashion, and the porterization set up helps a lot when the sun is up.

Findings:
60'- Same
330'- ~1.3 tenths saved
1/8- ~1.7 tenths saved

After using a K&N type filter for 5 years I have not had a problem. I clean it every two years and have not had any MAF problems. The MAF is very easy to clean anyway.

Why do the oiled filters not cause problems when new? I feel the real problem is people use too much oil and clean the filter too often.

I agree, that's why they color the oil red, so you know where you've oiled. If you're worried, clean the MAF a week or so after you've re-oiled.

I've done lots of testing at the track. Trust me the SHO loves cold air. Mine will run low 15's in sub 45 degree weather and 15.4-15.7 in anything warmer than 65 degrees.

Does anyone have an opinion about whether or not a cowl hood would let enough cool air in to use a cone filter without losing too much performance?

I don't think a cowl hood is what you want. You'd have to have the filter located close to the cowl to get the benefit (my speculation only).

What I'd like to do is make a fiberglass hood with a subtle scoop like they put on some of the Subaru's. Nothing too big or ricey, but something that could look like it came that way stock.
