This question does not pertain to my car, but is just out of total curiosity. Knowledge is power.

Without opening up the valve covers to actually see, how would you tell if you're getting cam lobe wear? I'm assuming there would be symptoms, but what would they be?

Beth,

I do not think there is any definitive way of detecting cam lobe wear without seeing them. Whether by noises, metal particles, dyno output or other measure, you can not isolate the effects of cam lobe wear without being able to see and touch them.

Hmmmm...very interesting. Guess it's kindof a "stealth" problem. I just figured there might be some outward signs. To kindof quote Forrest Gump...SHO's are like a box of chocolates... :)

Thanks Scott!

GIVE ME ALL YOUR CHOCOLATE AND NOBODY GETS HURT!!!

You might want to try oil analysis, it can detect metal. Maybe they can tell the difference between the blocks cast iron and other steel parts.

you can only see one cam lobe from the oil fill cap. that's it though. It'd be the #5 cylinder's exhaust lobe.
