Well as the title says, i just got some new rear speakers. After listening to them all at circuit city i decided on the brand new panasonic 5x7/6x8. the blue one's. They've definetly got a little more bass than the stock speakers and they are 10 times clearer. The only weird thing is that when at the store i had the stereo on the wall pretty much louder than i would ever go in the Sho and the speakers had no distortion or pop at all. Thats one reason why i went with them. But then after installin them in the store parking lot and testing them out, i noticed that i couldn't go much louder than the stock speakers because the bass would start getting poppy. Mind you i was playing the same cd in the store and in my car. So the only thing i can see to do to clear that up is to eventually get one of those pioneer HU's that i was testing the speakers out in the store with. Seems like the stock HU or amp just puts out the sound differently. Another excuse to change the HU! Is there any chance that the premium sound amp could be putting more than 40 watts rms out? Anyway, these seem to be pretty decient speakers for $69.99.

I would venture to say that the factory amps/hu are getting old and cant handle/push the new speakers.

I would bet that a decent aftermarket HU hooked up directly to the speakers would sound mucho better...with no popping.

Oh and 94 opal frost MTX :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

They may have had the speakers running through an amp at Circuit city as well. Also, don't forget that the acoustics of the room they build in the store to demo their speakers are far better than the rear deck of a SHO. Finally, the JBL system was specifically designed to work with the JBL speakers as one unit- adding different speakers ma produce different sound, as the freqeuncies the stock amps send the speakers may be different than what they were getting at Circuit City.

Id say that ifyou are looking for stellar sound, you would probably want to go with an aftermarket deck and also an aftermarket amp. If the amp is not in the financial cards, get an aftemarket deck and bypass the factory amps. Any decent deck will have built in crossovers and Eq so you can get the rear speakers to sound right.

Do you still have the stock front speakers?

ya, i've still got stock front speakers, but only because they didn't have them in stock. I was trying to get the 6 1/2 panasonic's that matched the rear, and i probably will in a week or two. The other thing too, is that i only have premium sound, so i only have the one amp to worry about, and no jbl speakers to have to "match" up to or anything. But i definetly agree that getting a new HU, preferably a pioneer, and bypassing the amp, would definetly sound great to me. And besides, the stock premium sound amp only puts out 20 watts, right, so even a cheap pioneer would match or beat it.

when/if you get a new headunit, try running it with the stock amp bypassed, and without it bypassed. It will probably be louder if you leave the stock amp in the loop(As it was in my case when i had the prem.sound amp). Will it necessarily sound better? Who knows, but it's worth a shot to try it both ways. The little harness that bypasses the amp (while not necessarily needed to bypass the amp), is kinda nice to have if you want to experiment.

Get those front speakers upgraded...they're the ones that have the biggest impact on you, the driver. And dont skimp.

Also, i believe there are new headunits with built in crossovers that effectively limit the rear speakers to just bass duty...New Alpine models? Perhaps something to look into. Although i'm sure with a new headunit and speakers..you'll be plenty satisfied until you want some real bass

The most probable reason that you couldn’t turn the new speakers up in the much past the old ones is that the amp was running out of power (clipping) amps loose the ability to make clean power the higher you turn the volume up . In most case that’s above the 50% mark on the volume ****.

In most cases an external amp with the same power rating as a head unit with a built in amp will tremendously out perform the head unit. The external amp will have the ability to make cleaner power longer (or louder however you look at it)

Power doesn’t blow speakers, distortion does. If you can make clean power (no distortion) you can safely put more power to a speaker than it’s rated for. if you have a speaker rated at 50 watts at 4ohms and a head unit rated at 50 watts at 4ohms odds are that the head unit cant make that 50 watts cleanly and can damage the speaker or at the least cause it to start sounding bad early (just like the example you gave of not being able to turn your stereo up any louder than with the old speakers) this is why you see most people with high end systems using small external amps on there mids and highs and not using the amp in the head unit at all. This is also why ford used external amps on the JBL systems rated something close to 20 watts RMS at 4ohms and not the 20 watt peak power amps that are in most ford head units.

remember if that slick aftermarket head unit is claiming 50 watts a channel that’s most likely peak power and its actual RMS is probably only about 20 watts and probably only slightly better than you premium sound factory amp.

A HU is a head unit, (radio). I figured something out too, if your new speakers don't sound as good as your old one's try turning down the bass a few dots. I've found that the bass turned down 4 dots on the HU sounds better than the old speakers, and still has the same if not more bass than the old speakers.
