Hi there, I jsut picked up my 1994 silver MTX and had a couple of problems...

1) Handbrake is shot, the wire is stuck on the left rear-wheel, it required that I remove the wheel and knock the wire/spring back into place... What do I need to replace and how much will it cost?

2) Picked up the car this afternoon, drive approx. 60 kms with it no problems... Then I did 3 things;
a) Filled her up with 91 octane at the local Ultramar.
b) Pulled the handbrake and took 2 hours to fix it wink
c) Drive rather, well, vigourously...
Now I get intermittent "Check Engine" lights, while cruising on the highway, with the cruise control on or off, the light comes on intermittently and the car ever so slightly slows down, then gently surges ahead...
Did I break my new car ???

Thats it from the newbie wink

Naw...sounds like O2 sensors though, but you should run the codes on it. The check engine lights to tell you something is wrong and it stores that info. You can find the info on running the test at www.shotimes.com in the maintanance section.
Also you'll have to replace the e-brake cables. Cost depends on where you get them and Who you know. wink
I use Ford only.
PS WELCOME to the Forum!!

Also I jsut realized that my engine temp never goes above the lower part of the "Normal" range. Perhaps the thermostat? I think I need a coolant system flushing too.

I noticed today also that the Check Engine light only comes on the highway when I am at a contant speed, never while cruising around town in stop and go traffic.

O2 sensors were recetnly replaced by the former owner, I have the receipts to prove it...

Ahy other sugestions?

BTW I plan on getting a print-out of the codes soon.

No sense in doing anything without the codes. You can get a cheap code reader from any autoparts store or use a piece of wire to jump the pins and read the flashes on the dash. I would also recommend looking at the shotimes faq. There is a link at shoclub.com.

Here is a better site for describing the EEC testing and codes. http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

I also suspect one of the oxygen sensors, but you should really check the codes so that you don't waste your time and money fixing something that isn't broken.

The 180 degree thermostat in the MTX SHO usually has the temp needle around or below the "L" of NORMAL. As long as the needle is between the upper and lower tick marks of the NORMAL range, the temperature is, well, normal. It is preferable to have the temperature in the low end of the range. Say, around the "L."

This is gonna sound like broken record CHECK the CODES. If the O2 sensors have recently been changed and yours is equiped with EGR I bet your nostrils are pluged and your gettin code 332.
Let us know what codes your getting so we can help.

I can't remember the brand, but most auto parts stores like auto zone, etc. carry one for about $30, just ask them if they have a ford eec-iv code reader and they should be able to help. I would recommend just doing the jumper/check engine light method over one of those. Cheap ones are just an LED that flash out the error code, exactly the same as the check engine light, except they cost $30 or more and the jumper you probably have what you need laying around for free.

I'm having the same problems with the check engine light. Can someone recommend a good "cheap code reader"?
But you don't need a code reader. See the link I posted above. All you need is a short jumper wire and your ignition key. Spend the money if you must, but it isn't necessary.

Engine compartment, passengers side, on fire wall. Attached to plastic shroud that spans the entire fire wall that cover a/c and heater stuff. There are two off them one for ABS one for EEC. Depending on the year of your car it may actualy be labled. They are secured in caps that mount to the plastic shroud.
